Used to be, you used to have to pack a gun to pick them. I talked to a buyer and #1’s are only going for $7 a pound now. Back in the 80’s or early 90’s they were hundreds of dollars a pound.

Too blasted dry here in my neck of the woods for much of a fall mushroom harvest. We got a good drink yesterday and into last night,,, but it was the first significant rain in about a month and a half.

These grow in pretty dry ground. I’m going tomorrow to find some other kinds towards the coast. Have a bunch drying now.

I love the smell of matsutakes. I see a couple of #1's (buttons) in there. Most of those would be 4's and 5's. Maybe 50 cents to dollar a lb.

methyl cinnamate and a drop of 1-octen-3-ol. You can buy both in perfumery supply stores, mix and put a dab on one of those little tree car freshener things.

Replace methyl cinnamate with dimethyl sulfide and you get tuber smell, more or less.

Yep, for me Matustakes smell like a mix of cinnamon with a touch of garlic.

Sure fire elk attractant too.

That should be easy to follow.

It's a Pinus. Matsutakes love pinuses.

Carl I just left an air tag in your truck when we went to the fur sale together. I have all the spots now.

In my experience that Pinus would be waaaay too small for Matsutakes. They like 'em big!
BTW, Tatiana...do you know if the proper taxonomic pronunciation is "pie-nus" or "pea-nus"?
