Here's a video I made of my coyote working a cubby dirt hole set 6 years ago. I think the original posts are long gone. It gives you a good idea of how they act and where to set.

The hole is baited with an otter gland lure, made by one of members. It got worked well by Katie, my coyote, my dogs and wild coyotes, for quite a while after it was put out, despite heavy rain and snow.

Foxkid's post made me think of it.

Here's a rolling response when the lure drips onto the ground.

Thanks Keith. I don’t think people realize how much time canines spend at a set. Or commit to feeling comfortable retrieving the prize.

Here's the response at the same spot, 3 days later, after heavy rain and snow.

Weeks later both Katie and the dogs checked that spot out still. Other animals likely kept the spot interesting smelling, but I suspect some scent from the lure lingered too.

I wonder how many free range coyotes would commit to a cubby set like that

Yes Sir. Every canine is different But many would. I have caught coyotes in coon set cubbies. Guarded with a 1 1/2 Duke coil.

Food is food. In the wild it comes in all places. Easy and difficult places.

Coyotes are very scared of new objects in their environment. Anything new would make Katie freak out. New objects placed in the backyard, that she was in 6 plus times a day, such as a bucket, air tank or pot, would make her freeze and often flee, when she saw them.

That was basically just a pile of wood I burned for campfires and to cook on. The local coyotes definitely did visit it because they left scat their. I suspect that in familiar territory, anything new is often avoided at first.

In the videos, I had her on a long check cord, that I mostly let her drag. She was generally good off leash, but I always worried that if she ran off property, she would be shot. She probably approached the sets pretty close to how a wild coyote would, but not perfectly so.

I put the lure in a very deep hole, so she wouldn't get it out and roll on it. I also used the wood to make it harder to reach the lure. Katie dug really fast, but usually wouldn't move large objects that were in the way.

If I was trapping a wild coyote, I would not have used as much backing.

I mainly wanted to see how coyotes reacted to lure, including how they dug, rolled and where they stood in relation to the lure.

I bought her from a breeder in Antwerp, Ohio. She was pulled from her mother at birth and raised in an individual box pen with one section per pup. She likely never saw another coyote.

She was good until her second heat, when she turned aggressive towards Diane, when Diane wore perfume for probably the first time since we had Katie.

I decided it was best to Old Yeller Katie.

I learned a lot, but would not have a coyote again.

Ive got hundred of videos of coyotes working test sets and avoiding them too. And have seen the evidence of coyotes working over a thousand test sets and my opinion differs from yours. Coyotes have been caught in cage traps and probably even in a tire set and actually probably every set a human can imagine and probably about everything a person can think of for a bait or lure because there's alwsys a few really hungry and/or bold coyotes out there. Neighbor caught one in a basement window

I just hate to mislead a beginner trapper.

One of the advantages of a cubby set for cats is the majority of the coyotes won't work them. Not all but the majority
