I've used a lot. My favorite at present is what Minnesota trapline sells a a cheap beaver skinning knife. I've hit bone and all it takes is a few strokes on a steel or in a pinch a window top

Kabar 1001 Slimline Trapper.
On my 3rd one in 55 years and have a new one waiting in the box.
1094 carbon steel. These will really take an edge.
Sad to see Kabars's line of conventional pocket knives go down.

Not my personal knife, just an internet pic:

Yes, before I learned to use a steel I sharpened a few knives down to almost nothing. A steel will quickly restore an edge and expand the length of time between sharpenings..

Eh...wot?

I’m HORRIBLE at sharpening, so I use a weibe handle with havalon blades. The havalon blades are better IMO.

I got this set from Jack three or four years ago. He made the scales from some walnut I had sitting around in my shop for probably 20 years.

I ruined quite a few knives before I learned the fine art of knife sharpening with a steel and used a EZ lap knife sharpener which can and does remove a lot of steel from the knife blade in a hurry .
Using a steel doesn't to the extent but with a feather soft touch will bring back a razor sharp edge with a little effort .
With a depressed fur market keeping a few extra dollars in ones pocket makes sense to me instead of buying more replacement blades .

Yes I agree Jack " Gulo " Whitman made a darn nice collection of knives , like many others I'm a proud owner of some of them also .

You're friend along the snare line .
