Hunger is a heck.of a motivator.
Was looking at some projects CCC crews did back in the '30s.
Got room and board, ALL they could eat, which was a BIG deal back then.
Plus $5/ month to spend as they pleased, the other $25/ mo.got sent to.their family.

You would have to have something majorly wrong with you, if you can't get a job in most of the US. A lot of people think the jobs they can get are beneath them and would rather get benefits than work.

You’re painting with a broad brush. My aunt runs a local rural food bank here in north central Pa. I help her out as much as I can, I unload all the delivery trucks. We’re 100 plus days without a state budget, so we no longer get any food from the state. I was supposed to have a federal truck to unload when I get back from moose hunting, but all the trucks with federal bought groceries are also cancelled.

I don’t see folks lining up in nice cars. About half of the clients have someone bring them to the distribution days…they don’t drive. Most are old wore out folks….they aren’t going back to work.

Had an old couple ( in their early 80s ) reluctantly sign up in September. He worked in the coal strip mines his whole life. He’s busted up, walks with a walker. My aunt processed their application….their total income ( all from SS ) is $28,540 a year. Try to get by on that.

These folks aren’t beggars, they’re old wore out people with little income. And you want the food bank to run out? Unbelievable how heartless some can be.

that works on the premise that those millions of job openings are real. my oldest teaches elementary school art and spend time trying to find a summer job for some additional spending cash.
they have worked food service so they have experience with that while they were in college.
they are well educated
get to work on time with no issue
now perhaps it was the limited time they would be available as a week before school started back up they would need to return to school for their carreer

but if near every place has a help wanted sign up and a competent school teacher can't get a food service job , are they really wanting help ?

Bigbrownie, your story coincides with a lot of what I've seen. I will add that housing costs are so high in many states (including much of Oregon) that low income earners have to decide if they pay rent... or eat. Younger folks that have burger flipping jobs, etc, find it pretty hard to make a go of it.

There is a contingency/emerbendy fund of about 93 billion that has been used in the past to fund a continuation of Snap benefits when the feds can't get their act together. From what I hear the current administration is not allowing that to happen this time. Probably a strategy to put more pressure on the Dems to back down.

Shoot had someone call me the other day asking if I'd have some extra deer meat , since snap was going out they where looking for some donations....this is a Something year old man. Asked him if he had a gun, said yeah he has a nice AR . Told him if he needs meat so bad I'll give him permission on my 60acres and he'd be welcome to go harvest a deer or two and all the hog he wanted.... Yeah apparently that want what he wanted to hear

Snap and food stamps is basically a generational curse down here .it's to the point it's just friggen sad. And as usual all the people I've known who really need it can't get it down how but all these other parasites can and will be buying. Steak and lobster !

Still say they should have it but let the dang options but , gummint cheese , potato, shoot my grandma always said if wild hogs where such a big issue process em can them and give that to folks in need " if they really need food they won't care what the heck it is " what she used to say

The number one item bought with SNAP is soda pop. They should just be given fixed amounts of raw food like meat, vegetables, fresh fruit, flour, sugar, milk and cheese. Nobody would starve or suffer unduly on those. If they couldn't get what they really wanted to eat, most people would go get a job.

We occasionally help with "Harvesters" a surplus food distribution program. The number of times I have seen folks pull up in a nice Cadillac to get free food is shocking.

I agree. If it weren't for all the vested interests and their money this would have gone away long ago. Sugar isn't food...it's the poor people's poison.

Lol because people just get it. Half of them don't need it. I'd say 80% bare minimum if the people I know down here in that mess legit don't need it. The man thing I've always heard is along the line of " if there offering for free it take it " plain and simple . Been to some of these peoples places , husbands a contractor nice truck big ole house or something his ole lady gets food stamps and snap will have boxes of cookies and other junk food just in a corner don't even eat it haut have it because it was basically free

Mean while got people like my sister in law who ..... Arguably.. would actually benefit from snap due to there low income but she can't get it because of some about how much she makes or something? ....

I was watching CNBC a couple days ago, and they were covering the run on a food bank just outside D.C., and it showed the same thing. One nice, (less than 5 years old), vehicle after another. HUNDREDS OF THEM!
They had to divert traffic as those over-paid, temporarily laid off milk-worms scrounged the pantry. Makes me sick!

It's rare for me to agree with you, but I completely do here. Every time I'm in the store I see some 300+ lb women (both white, and black women) with half a dozen unminded kids terrorizing other customers, checking out carts full of steaks, lobster, Coke and frozen foods. The white women invariably also have hundreds of dollars worth of tattoos. Meanwhile... a couple years ago..... my mom has degenerative bone disease and cannot be on her feet for more than 10 minutes at a time, and cannot sit in one place for longer than half an hour or so. She is on disability. Her husband is the sole income, and he is lower wage. So a couple years ago, he got some sort of infection in his foot that resulted in a hole in the top of his foot the size of a golf ball. Doctor told him he could not work, he told the doc he had to... Doc said, "Well ok, but if you do, you WILL lose your foot." So, he took a leave of absence. Between her disability and his reduced worker's comp, they were bringing in less than $1500/month. I told them to go apply for food stamps. Even though I hate the program, in my mind, what it was designed for was exactly that situation... someone needing a little help until they can get back on their own two feet. They were flat out denied. I guess $1500 a month is too high of an income?

As for the food pantries... during that same period, I took my mom to a food pantry deal I saw advertised, said they were giving away boxes of fruits and veggies. I was shocked when I got there, as there was well over 100 cars in line in a town with a population of maybe 1000. Every single vehicle in the line was MUCH newer than mine, and I wasn't the one looking for free food.

If you can't get by on $28500 a year, maybe you need to learn how to budget. I don't feel that any one person or couple that is getting that much a year should be eligible for anything with the possible exception of help with emergency medical.

You are spot on, it was designed and sold to the public when passed as a safety net, not a lifestyle.

An audit just found that pop and junk food purchases with SNAP went up this last month, once recipients found out that SNAP benefits may be effected by the government shutdown. The logical thing to do would have been to buy low cost staples. Poor people in America apparently worry more about sugary, salty and fat addictions being met than actually not starving.

Im for helping ones that help thierselves and just need something to get them by. But I have said for many years it needs to be different set up, like missouri wicc program x amount of money for fruit,amount of money for beans,amount for veggies. Not a free for all on anything processed, junk or pre made meals. The least you can do is learn to cook for your family a good healthy or some what healthy meal! How many times i watch 2 cart fulls of soda and chips and a eat cart gets pulled out. Drives me crazy, most stay home do nothing get discount housing food stamps and they are 300 plus, and 200 pound 12 year old because they dont cook!

But they will get their hair and nails did…
