Finished up putting a dirt hole set in today on the edge of an alfalfa field. Put everything back on the ATV, and lo and behold, about 150 yards out, here's a coyote laying down watching me. It just stood up, and trotted off when I started the ATV. Kinda crazy.
Of course I didn't have rifle with me.

Let us know if you get a yote in that set.

I bet it happens frequently in open country.

I’ve been planting traps and had coyote(s) off in the distance threat howling at me already.

Twice in my life I’ve set a trap and came back by it within several hours and had a coyote already. The second time was a coyote I’m convinced watched my dispatch the first one, came down and got caught after I left.

Not trapping but sitting a water hole for antelope one day and mid afternoon had a lion stand up on the other-side and walk away. No idea how long he was there, very uneasy feeling

That'd be unsettling for sure.

Nothing today, but saw another coyote while turkey hunting. They are out there.

Had the same happen here a few times as Boone has. I'm sure they were the same coyotes caught that were watching. I think after you leave, they are curious as to what you were doing and go to check things out.

Was putting in a dirt hole for Gary fox by the woods
Got up and a deer standing 5 feet from me.
Later I found he got his nose in the set but just missed the trap pan.

I told this story before...I remember back in the '90s pounding a rebar stake in hard ground. Across the creek I hear some rustling around...there stands a big buck 6-8 pointer snorting. I stood up and he stood his ground. During the rut....

Years ago I was banging a set in in some somewhat tall grass.

Look up to see coyote watching me about 150 yards away.

My dog hadn’t seen him yet, but the coyote was just fixated on the dog.

The coyote went into sneak mode and started coming around our downwind side. Fixated on the dog the whole time. Which still was blissfully ignorant to what was going on.

There was no doubting when it hit our wind as the whole situation changed in a blink.

The coyote turned to light out, I jumped up and began the 20 yard sprint to the truck and my rifle (I wasn’t fast enough), oh, and the dog, he was wondering what time lunch was.

Interestingly enough, I had some problems with a true, habitual digger in that area (which is actually pretty rare). And several times would have a coyote threat barking at me from a series of hills while I was in that area checking traps.

Always wondered if it was that specific coyote we had the encounter with.
