Here's a hide that's been fleshed, bucked (soaked in a KOH solution, similar to wood ash), hair and grain removed. Now stretched to dry as rawhide. I'll store them like this until I decide to dress and soften (tan) them later. Or the rawhide has a thousand uses also.

Interesting!!
So what are all the uses for raw hide. I know a boot maker that uses raw hide in soles for boots.

Knife sheaths, containers of all sorts, tying stuff up, wrapping knife handles. Moc soles. Anywhere you need something tough, or something wrapped tight. It shrinks as it dries.

The term rawhide nowadays can mean several different things, not just pure rawhide.

It took me a few to figure it out, but once it clicked, they come out real nice. Too nice to hang on the wall.

Looks good! Making rawhide takes a lot of work but is cool to work with and the kind of projects you can do are only limited by your imagination.

My daughter wanted to make a hand drum and asked if I would help her. So I started saving skins and making rawhide. We've made around 15 hand drums and other stuff. It has been a good bonding experience for my daughter and I after she went through a rough patch.

We ended up making drums and rattles for gifts to friends. We used deer, elk, bighorn sheep and beef hides (won't do that again LOL).

I even tried a little rawhide from Largemouth Bass skin

I had a project for a drainage where I needed to join two 20 foot sections of pipe in a difficult location. I couldn't get them sucked together no matter what I tried. Then the idea hit me to use rawhide. I cut some lace and soaked it and stretched it as far as I could then lashed the two pipe ends together and let it dry. As it dried I would go out and wiggle the pipes a little and they slowly joined over a couple days until they were tight.

Nice rawhide work.

How was the bighorn to work? A lot of the Indian garments were made with sheep skins.

I harvested my ram in 2018 and had a shoulder mount done. I made rawhide out of the back half. We made a drum and several rattles with it. It was very similar to deer to work with. Maybe a bit thicker than the average buck deer.
