I've gone out to fatals as a member of my FD. Not fun stepping over puddles of human blood on the road surface. I can remember each location and whenever I pass by that spot , I still remember what exactly happened there. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/10/full-3135-272979-328165d5_c523_4281_96d5_9449b199224f_1_all_1310.jpg) This picture was taken at 2:45am. Our firetruck does a good job lighting a scene. There was (2) 20ish year olds in the car. One didn't make it. Fleeing from the police for graffiti. What a waste of a young life , for something so minor.

we have 4 intersections in a few miles that have a growing collection of crosses at them.
2 are slated for round abouts in the next few years

thing about roundies is that while they cause a lot of accidents they tent to be all non injury minor vehicle damage

they just finished up a roundy at the intersection of 92 and 14 east of Brooklyn WI that was one that had a loss of life about every to every other year. it really does make the traffic flow a lot better there especially if you are coming from 92 , its a 20-30 second slow down for the 14 traffic but we hope to see no more loss of life there.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I have always told my family to NOT put crosses/memorials at wreck scenes...they are nothing but a distraction for drivers, and a pita for road crews.

I left work, got on the highway, traffic was stopping and some kid was naked sticking out out from under that back of a camry. His friends were crying Nate Nate and the traffic stopping was the nurses driving on the highway at shift change from the hospital.
I went by and pulled over and as traffic backed up behind us the nurses came running up between the cars.
I had to pause and talk to myself for a minute like you don't want to see this but he might need your help so off I went.
I asked the nurses what they needed and they said a blanket and saw an RV in traffic and demanded they give me a blanket.
I gave it to them and they were rescuing him and I was just standing there so I left.
They mentioned it on the news. I don't know if he made it or not.

Nate bought a new used Honda CRV the car not the suv and was driving home, hydroplaned, parked where I did, got out and walked around his new car to make sure it was alright, and an asian guy with is little girl in the front seat also hydroplaned and ran him over.

When that happens a high percentage of the time your clothes and shoes come off I guess.

I checked on them and they were in shock, ghost white, and couldn't talk... the people in the car I mean.

Hope you made it Nate, if not - RIP.

I say that b/c i preach and preach to my family about pulling over and getting behind a bridge pillar or something... so its what gets hit, not you or your car.

 Be safe out there.

Weve had to cut a few folks out. We dont have the freeways as many accidents but they do happen here. ITs important that your department talk it over with your crew after the scene is cleared and your putting gear away. If it still bothers you your local Behavioral Health should be offering some type of help.

I can remember every fatal scene I have been on in the last 32 years as State Trooper, but I don't dwell on them. I retire this Friday and hope I never have to deal with another Fatal crash, suicide or murder scene again.I'm sure you've seen way more than your fair share of bad things and people at the worst moments of their lives. I hope you enjoy your retirement; after 32 years, you've certainly earned it. I wish you well.

In the late 80s, an elderly couple hit a deer on a rainy night. They were in a VW Beatle. The buck came through the windshield and ended up in the back seat. The husband was killed. Wife was confused but OK. Blood everywhere from the deer. Rescue people confused at first. Wife had no knowledge of the deer in their backseat.
 Happened near Eden, NC.

A few years ago I was stopped at a bus stop waiting for some kids to cross when some impatient driver went out around the bus and its flashing lights and struck three kids, one died on the spot and one at the hospital the other one recovered, not a pretty thing to see

Myself and 2 other game wardens were first on scene at a rollover one night. Both men were ejected and crunched as the truck rolled over them. One was an an obvious fatality. The other was unconscious with very ragged breathing. As we carefully checked for bleeding we could see his skull was the wrong shape. He was still breathing when the ambulance took him away but he died on the way to the hospital.
Another time, a neighboring game warden was passed by a semi going too fast down a steep grade with switchbacks. The truck was just going too fast to make a turn. The driver laid the truck on it's side for about a hundred yards before it went sailing over some junipers as it left the road on the bend. It rolled when it landed. Terry was there within 30 seconds. He found the driver still buckled in and injured but conscious. He told Terry his passenger had panicked and jumped from the truck. I responded within about 15 minutes and there was already a highway patrol and deputy sheriff there searching with flashlights for the passenger. We found several hundred dollar bills, then his wallet. Then the trooper found a bloody smear on the road where the truck was skidding on its side. We then found some tissue with what looked like maybe teeth in some grass where the truck left the road. It was actually bones from his fingers. The deputy finally found his body in the top of one of the junipers. It was not a pretty sight.

I believe those three men would likely have survived had they been buckled in at the time of the crashes.

 United we stand.
