I am working on an assignment to see how well snare poles work for squirrels and using squirrels as a training tool for younger trappers for handling larger furs. If anyone has pictures, info, or experience using squirrels, please let me know.

There are videos out there somewhere, maybe been on here before about snaring squirrels. I checked into it, because the way you needed to do it( and the video showed) was in contrast to some state regs. And since the squirrels(in some states) are game animals, and not predators, it is unlawful to snare them.

Game animal not fur bearer. Not legal in Indiana from what I saw

You know what they meant. lol

... But maybe those pot squirrels that PF mentioned are predatory. After a little research P.O.T. may be an acronym for Predatory Offset Testis, could explain it?

I've snared a couple squirrels in the past Husky, but never intentionally. They were incidental catches in raccoon snares set in trails. Squirrels hopped up through the loop I guess.

Husky check with anyone in the wilderness forum. There might be a few individuals in there that do a lot of it. Just a thought.

A pole between trees at a midden, 24 or 26 guage brass or stainless wire, pretty sure it was a 1 1/2 inch loop set 2 finger widths above the pole. There is a learning curve as with anything. I don't remember where but it is on this site somewhere. Might have been Bocco or maybe and alaskan guy that talked about it. I will look for a pic on my phone.

Yea I meant squirrel, in states I’m familiar with, is considered game animal, as opposed to fur bearer, so no snaring or trapping, unless obtained for nuisance/damage control at a residence.

And I think the guy did mention it would be for survival purposes, knowing it was illegal in many places.

Maybe in AK and Canada, but it is illegal in some of the southern states.

I found a very good article about squirrel snaring in the archives. Thank you for all your help.

Squirrels are listed under a fur bearing animal in Alaska. No limit and no closed season.

Is any of the Alaska trappers going to the ATA meeting on Tuesday?

Husky,

Check with Coalcreekkid on the kid forum or his Dad Victor #0 on here. They have a buyer that is paying young trappers great prices for put up squirrels.

You should get a paper copy of our reg's and read it as much as you can. You will learn about the laws of all of our different Game Units.

Then get a paper copy of the hunting reg's and get to know the difference in taking animals under a hunting license or a trapping license and all the laws.

This will really help you take more animals in Alaska. Use the reg's to your advantage. Stay legal and help others. Learn the wolf and wolverine laws for sure.

No, I will not be attending the meeting. Have fun and listen closely to the older trappers. Ask lot's of questions too. Good luck with the squirrels!

My Super Wide will pull your broken down 4 stroke, up a hill backwards, with you on it!

I have already talked to CoalCreekKid about the squirrel buyer, but that is information he doesn’t want to share. Which is understandable.

I always have current hunting, fishing, and trapping regulations on hand. I spent several years learning the regs like the back of my hand, and I keep adding to it as changes are made each year.

Trapping season opens tomorrow (at least for Alaska), so good luck everyone!
