This is just a catch-up post as this was over a week ago.
Day 1 of the North Dakotan Expedition…
After some very uncomfortable pickup camping last night, Dad and I waited until right after sunrise to hit the cattails for some North Dakotan roosters. The wind and wetness made the conditions not super comfortable for us to hunt in, but the successes it caused, made it ALL worth it. Our six birds were bagged in just under an hour! I am QUICKLY becoming a fan of Migra's 6/8 stacked load!
We had a couple properties that had some shelterbelts the looked “hunny”, so we gave them a go. Right away, I had a covey flush of 12-18 Hungarian partridge and managed to down one. While also chasing huns, we had on one quarter piece of property a bull moose, a large mule deer doe, and two whitetail deer does plus some pheasants to boot. A TON of wildlife on just 160 acres of land!
We then headed to our “home base” a day early because of an extra night opening. We hauled some gear in, relaxed, and made a game plan for some scouting/jump-shooting.
The afternoon/evening faired well also while managing two bluewings, three shovelers, a coot, a Canada goose, and a surprise sharpie! We think we found a spot to start with in the morning for some pheasants (although it’s pretty opposite of what we were hunting in this morning). That’s what makes these hunts so uniquely special.
A very great start to our October Adventure!
