Not taking away from her accomplishments, but ole CJ got him a buck yesterday evening. We’d been hunting hard and I couldn’t figure out what this boy wanted. I don’t know if it the Autism or the fact I never asked. We’ve seen some really really nice bucks, 130-140” and he kept saying “not big enough” or “not my buck”
Yesterday evening we watched this buck chase a doe up to high thick ground to a spot we call the old homesite. We could catch a glimpse every once in a while right around the 175-200yd mark.
I kept praying that doe would come on out and our way before we lost daylight and it happened. When we’d first seen the buck I saw decent G2’s, but as he came closer I saw he’d passed up several bucks much bigger antler wise. What I didn’t know was CJ wasn’t looking at antlers, he was looking at body size. As the buck got closer I asked if wanted this buck as he was tracking it in the scope and got a rather loud “Oh YEAH”
I told him to stay on him and I’d “mey” at the buck to stop him and when he stopped he’d have to shoot. On my third and almost yelling “MEY” it stopped.
At the shot I heard the THUMP and watched the buck reel around and head back the way he’d come. He made it about 75yds and went down. It was then I felt the Tower shaking. I let him calm down a bit and he had to go see his buck. I told him we’d go slow and I’d carry the gun incase a follow up shot was needed. He went down first and my second step down the ladder and he was 75yds away looking for blood already, lol. I’d marked a tree where the buck went down but when I got it to it, it was much thicker than I thought. I was looking one direction and CJ went the other and he found it.
Now mind you, CJ has never shown much emotion in his life, but finding “his buck” let the flood gates open. It was a new experience for him because he told me he doesn’t know why he’s crying other than being happy he killed the biggest buck of his life and was it normal??
I told him it was completely normal and that’s where most guys cried…in the woods. He kept saying the biggest buck he’s ever killed and I jokingly said we’d have to compare the antlers to last years deer and he said antlers? I haven’t been looking at antlers, I’m looking at body size and this buck is bigger than anything else I’ve EVER killed. He was correct, that deers neck was way bigger than his waist line.
