While waiting on it to get here I watched some videos and such on sighting it in. Every glass I have looked through the crosshairs have been on the target but I saw where some folks prefer to be right or left so they can actually see the target in full view.

Have any of you set yours up this way?

Pros and cons?

Never saw or heard of that, you want the bullet to hit where the crosshairs show.....If you need more field of view you use a lower power...

I want to hit exactly where my crosshairs are.No extra thought process to think over.Keep it simple.

if you shoot a very set size of target at a very specific distance and want to make itty bitty groups , that is a technique some people employ

if you change distances and targets , I like most center fire rifles like 308win sighted in to hit spot on at 200 yards , it will give some of the most usable ballistics data to use as well as being basically a no adjustment zero for 0 to 240 yards of course depending on the cartridge

Thanks GCP. Where I’m shooting is pretty much the same distance and target so I might give it a go and see if it suits.

How I like mine to be . Hold over under left or right for windage / drop

Question, using the info below would you just fire at zero and measure the drop or try to compensate for the “anticipated” drop to learn the gun?

Not sure of your question, but many people sight in to be 3" high at 100 yds, you'll be about on at 200, and several inches low at 300, so any shot up to almost 300 yds will be in a kill zone without fussing around figuring the drop. ballistically that stays consistent..Windage is the biggest issue, but ranges up to 200 yds it's negligible unless it's blowing a gale..longer range it gets important to know wind direction and approximate strength. windage is higher with the wind at 90 degrees, your bullet box should show aprox drop and windage,,, but you can fudge it a little by aiming up wind a few inches to a foot...all depending on range and wind strength and direction....clear as mud huh?, lol

I’m following, just wasn’t sure if shooting flat vs elevated would matter in how much drop.

This is how I "learn the gun." For any known bullet the ballistic coeficient (BC) can be found on the mfg site. With your load shot through a chronograph you can determine the muzzle velocity. Then, using one of many free programs available on the web you can deternine the drop at any distance for a specific zero. You can also play around with the program to select the most useful zero for the ranges you expect to make a shot on what you are hunting. I personally find a 200 yd zero to be the most useful for centerfire bottleneck cartridges used on big game. With my BC and MV I run the calculation and find out how high I would expect to hit at 100 yds with a 200 yd zero, sight for that point on a 100 yd target and confirm at 200 yds. This is pretty basic stuff. Just guessing is a bad idea.

shooting angle over about 10 degrees starts to make a difference , under 200 yards not enough difference to make a difference really

there are great calculators for all of this thing of it this way if you have a triangle A is the height of your stand , B is the distance from the base of your stand to the target and C is the hypotenuse your line of sight to the target.

no matter your angle only B matters** if you are say 300 yards above your target , and your target is 400 yards out from the sheer cliff you are perched on top of , the hypotenuse and your range finder would say 500 yards , but your range finder should also tell you angle
you are not actually shooting 500 yards you are shooting 400 so you aim at your 400 yard dope.

play with your possible scenarios in a calculator , Hornady has a very nice one.

The targets with the impact group off centered, is displayed to show the tight group. For hunting purposes, an inch or two high is perfect for most of us.
