Good morning,
This is my first attempt at skinning an opossum and as I was pulling the hide around the shoulders, I noticed a spot on the shoulder where it looked like I could see the hair follicles on the inside of the hide. Now, I'm not planning on putting this up to sell, I want to keep it as a tanned hide since it's my first one. I generally take anything that I catch (I don't catch much but it's fun to do with my sons) to Johsons Furs in Pa in the round and get the tanned hide back a few months later. This year I decided to try to skin some before taking them in to lower my tanning bill and get more proficient in this endeavor. I don't have the time right now or the stuff to flesh my skins, so I rolled it up the way Johnsons instructed me too and put it in the freezer so keep until I take it in. My question is, will the fact that I could see the hair through the skin cause a bald spot when I get it back from the tannery or is it because opossums have such thin skin. I don't have a picture since it's currently in the freezer and didn't think to take one last night.

I guess that it will be fine if you were pulling the hide off and saw it. If you were using a knife there and got too close to the hide (similar to fleshing it too deep) it may be a problem. I've not skinned a lot of possums admittedly, but the ones I did, I did not use a knife after the opening cut until I got to the ears on the head, all just pulling prior to that, like almost every other critter.

Correct, I only used the knife to open it and work around the head. This happened while I was pulling.

I'm not a possum tanning expert, hopefully someone here is, but my thinking is it'll be ok when it comes back from the tannery.

I think you'll be fine. I've skinned hundreds of possums and have had maybe 20 tanned for me with no problems.
