Million acres in the George Washington national forest alone... beautiful place in the fall, or anytime for that matter.

I’m guessing that you were looking for a real answer? Life long resident of SE VA. Much different deer than in the Western part of the state. They get bigger bodies and from my experience, more mass. Where I’m from, certainly folks shoot all kinds, but unless it’s 18” inside, most folks don’t bat an eye unless it’s super freaky or heavy. I also believe that we get bigger antlered bucks due to the Ag and big swamps.

Without any more perspective, I’d say nice buck as I would to anyone else who posts a pic. If it’s his 2nd biggest buck, then I’d say HE has a trophy.

I'll admit it.

I do not have "big" deer in my area. 5.5 year olds here avg around 150lbs live weight amd have 100" to 110" antlers.

But, these mature bucks here are much more difficult to kill than mature bucks in the midwest.

This is why you see very, very few hunting shows and videos filmed down here in the Southeastern US.

Send me the best buck hunter you got in the midwest down here to hunt (a mature buck) in SE Ga and I'll provide the Kleenex for him to wipe his tears on his empty-handed return trip home.

Then, I'll send you an average mature buck hunter from down here to the midwest and he will end up on the cover of North American Whitetail magazine in one season.

Ive never hunted deer down their SW so I have to ask what makes the mature bucks down there so hard to hunt?
Im just guessing the reason you dont see a lot of hunting shows down there would be because the mature bucks dont get huge down there based off ur comment.

I couldn't see the amount of cover you have down there being a hindrance

Where Swamp is, SEGA, they’d have to be in a pen with constant feed to get to 200lbs.
In SWGA it’s common for mature bucks to hit 200+ as long as you kill it before the rut. Our deer probably drop 50+ pounds or more during the rut and look sickly afterwards.

Beautiful buck Bruce!! That’s something I’ve never had the hankering to do, travel out of State to kill a deer.

Our deer are much more "wilder/spooky" than the deer I've hunted in north Missouri for past 15+ years. Our deer react more instantly and permanently to human scent or intrusion. One deer blows here and all deer scatter like a covey of quail. Midwestern deer are more "casual" in their actual movements thru those hardwoods and fields. Our deer are very deliberate and cautious as they move through this rough swampy-pineywoods terrain. Why? I don’t know. This topic has been the core of many discussions...lol

The amount of rough, heavy cover does factor in as that makes it much more difficult to get in the right spot without detection.

Yes....everyone wants big antlers....and to kill bucks with big antlers you have to go where the bucks have big antlers.
