What waders do y'all use for trapping? I had some chest waders that I got for fly fishing but I outgrew them. Do you like chest waders or hip boots? I'm looking into buying new ones and I'd like to be able to use them for fly fishing during the summer and trapping during winter/fall.
Thanks!

it really depends how deep your creeks and rivers where you'll be water trapping is. if you dont have to get deeper then 2ft deep hip boots would be my choice. i run neoprene chest waders becsue one they are warmer then fly fishing thin waders and 2 my creeks im normally over my waist in the water. but if i only had to be in 2ish feet of water hip boots all day. coffee starts flowing it sucks having take down your waders every time to pee.

Thanks Mike, I'm going to be getting good insulated tall rubber boots too so I can use those for anything up to just below my knee. For the waders I would need to be deeper than 2 feet so I think hip boots are out of the question. Good to know you like the neoprene ones. Yes, it is pretty darn annoying taking on and taking off chest waders, which is why I was thinking about the hip boots. Also I've seen waist high waders, they look just like regular pants. Maybe those would be good. What are y'alls thoughts on the waist high ones?

For the last 25+ years I have used LaCross Trappers hip boots. I sure don't want to need chesties while trapping. I have no desire to be wading around in water that deep dealing with traps and critters.
And really, for most of my trapping, both in southeast Alaska and now here in southern Oregon, I could do most trapping with Extra-Tuff boots, (other than rat trapping).
Chest waders would simply get me into places I probably shouldn't be. I know that filling a hip boot is inevitable, but as for comfort, mobility, and ease of removability, (not to mention taking a leak), I will choose hippers all day.

Just doing what I want now.

My guess is you'd be happy with hip boots 90% of the time. If I were in your situation I'd buy some good hip boots that will take the abuse of the trapline and some cheap waders for fishing and the very few times you'll need them trapping. [Linked Image]

La Crosse Hip Boots....no need to be swimming to make water sets.....

If you can afford it, having both, with higher quality hip boots, is a much better option like ADC says.

I was always a hip boot guy for beaver trapping I have the dans frog legs and have been very happy with them. A guy I work with suggested a pair of frog toggs hellbenders they are a stocking foot wader that you put the wader boots over. I really liked them for the price. I believe it was $170 for the waders and the boots. They are uninsulated so if you need something warm you might want to go a different route but I really liked the lace up boot instead of the bulky wader boots. Might be worth looking into. I was just beaver trapping for a week and had them on all day and you forget you are even wearing waders

Money is no obstacle for a hard working trapper like CC. He gets the hip boots then spends a tiny pittance of his massive first fur check to buy the chest waders. Easy-peasy for the guy! [Linked Image]

ADC I guess you're right... Kind of like buying the Henry; start out with the iron sights and then get a scope later. Well I'm not so sure about the massive fur check part though, or the part about money not being an obstacle lol laugh

Another vote for the lacrosse hip waders. Chest waders can be nice, but I found that when I wore them I occasionally pushed further and deeper than I should have. I got myself in trouble a few times that way.

Cool thanks Sam! Reminds me of a Patrick F McManus story where I think he said the same thing
