Hello everyone. I was gifted this old axe head by an old teacher of mine a few years ago. It was found in a hay field not far from me. I've always thought it was pretty neat, and I enjoy looking at it and wondering how old it is and thinking how mad the guy was when he lost it.

Anyway, my question is about the proper name for this tool. I've always called it an axe head, but have been told that it was more likely a tool for digging dirt. I don't know what the truth is, but thought some of you educated folks might know. Thank you for looking. [Linked Image]

That is VERY cool and I am not even into that sort of thing. I don't think it is that old as the dollar bill still appears crisp. There may even be a date on the bill to help you date the tool it was found with.

I have nothing clever to put here.

As stated it is a 3/4 groove axe and a very nice one. It was used to cut wood.

Don't you have a bratwurst swallowing contest to go win somewhere?

Nice looking axe, Sam.

I wouldn't go looking for a date. The wife might get the wrong idea, and you thought she was mad about the cookies? You ain't seen NOTHING yet!!

You are just sore because you found out you had to swallow it.

Thank you Woodsloafer. She finally calmed down about the cookies, so I'm about due to make her mad again anyway.

The natives would split the handle or get a forked one, it would go up each side of the groove, they then hafted it with leather and the flat side which is usually slightly grooved they would drive a wedge under the strapping to tighten it all up.

Thank you Nate, I appreciate the info. That's about what I imagined they did. I hadn't thought about the wedge, I was wondering how they got it tightened up.

I was told by a very good artifact hunter that they were often found in creek beds. Reason lost chopping ice.
