I have already spent close couple hundred in vet with meds, I don't know of any secluded places to go close, why does vet have charge so much to put asleep, if did go in country, and took out of cage, cat can crawl away fast when scared, what if he got away an perished outdoors, unless do it in the cellar , that would be messy an possibly dangerous with bullet

That sucks Dave. My vet didn't charge me anything. But that may be because I spent thousands trying to save the dog. Maybe try calling some other vets and see if you can find someone that charges less? Or maybe try calling the local animal shelter and explaining the situation and see if they can help somehow?

I don’t know if this is an option but when people cannot afford euthanasia , we have them surrender the pet and perform it. The only difference is they don’t get to be present and they do not receive the remains or any keepsakes like a paw print. Euthanasias can be a big production and take up a lot of time. The procedure involves giving a premedication of butoephanol to relax the pet and an iv catheter is placed and then we give propoflo followed by pentobarbital. If the owner will not be present we give full sedation intra muscular and forego the cost of an iv catheter and deliver the diluted solution directly IV. The job is still done with minimal to no stress to the pet and in a timely fashion. I really do not think $125 is a bad price for euthanasia and communal cremation. There is a great deal of overhead at a veterinary hospital and staff must be paid accordingly or they will choose to leave and make tik tok videos instead and then there will be no availability for when peoples pets are Ill. Just playing devils advocate.

My vet gave my dog a single injection as I held her, and she was gone before he could remove the needle. Instant, painless death that cost no more than the cost of whatever the solution was.

My vet gave my dog a single injection as I held her, and she was gone before he could remove the needle. Instant, painless death that cost no more than the cost of whatever the solution was. It depends on the case. I’ve had fractious or aggressive animals that required a catch pole to safely sedate, sometimes involving several technicians. I’ve had families come in grieving waiting for other family members to come in after work and tying us up for an hour and a half or more. If a pet is already on its way out and no sedation is needed and vein quality is very poor sometimes we have no choice but to just give the injection directly in the jugular. I am not familiar with using pentobarbital directly into the muscle to have effect. We never did it that way. Nor do I know how long it takes for the animal to expire. In cases of injured birds or wildlife, we have used isoflurane to sedate the pet and then delivered the solution intra cardia or intra abdomen and kept it on gas until it expired. It can vary.

He gave the injection in a foreleg. I believe it may have been intravenously, but I wasn't paying that close of attention. Everyone had told me how the dog would just slowly go to sleep so I was kinda shocked when it was so quick. I can understand the need to sedate aggressive dogs first.

Oh she was calm by nature, but she wasn't unwell... Well I means she was obviously, but still alert and mobile.

Dang sorry to hear this Coonman. I don't really have any advice for you as I've never had a cat or dog be put down, as far back as I can remember anyway. I hope it goes well however you do it.
