I have been trapping since the 22nd of October and am at 27 as of today. Having my aphasic/dementia suffering wife along limits my hours afield quite a bit. She likes to be out with me but is getting pretty impatient by 1:00-2:00. All that aside I’ve noticed a couple odd things this year. No fleas. Last year the fleas were terrible. I had flea bites all season. None this year.

And my female to male ratio is running 7 to 1 females to males. Normally it’s about 50/50. This year so far it’s 23 females and four males.

Just seems a bit odd.

Trail cameras and fresh snow have broke a lot of trapper’s hearts.

I’m not sure what the deal is but our coyote numbers are way up this year. Saw a pack of 8 one night and another night a pack of 12 to 16. I’ve never seen groups like that around here. Also learning to take down adult deer. I had to break that party up with the thermal. Shot four the first night, then 3 more the next two nights.

On the fleas I wonder if it’s because we had such a dry, hot summer. When I trapped eastern Washington, which is very hot and dry in the summer, I almost never encountered fleas on coyotes.

I don't start trapping until mid/late-December but I am seeing a lot of coyotes and sign. And their fur looks good--at least from the truck and deer stand.

I run a good chance of being snowed out by Thanksgiving up here at 3700 feet. I don’t have a snow machine nor tracks for my four wheeler. I run this line until a few day before Thanksgiving then after the excessive turkey consumption, I set up at lower elevation the first week of December and run until January 5th ish.

i had this several years ago also without digging my notes out of storage it ended up with like 25-5 out of three farm area and than again two years later of the same three farms never seen it since usually works out very close to 50-50 i talked to a biologist and he said that it was strange also as most den sites that he has ever checked always produced equal sexes but we where wondering if feed supply had changed in the area for whatever reason

It’s not uncommon to have “runs” of one sex or the other for a spell.

Many times ive had weeks where the kill is heavy on males.

A few weeks later it’ll be heavy on females in the same area.

I have no explanation for it.

I had a 17 coyote check on day, all female. Go figure.

If their eggs are buried in a south-facing sunny area, they''ll mostly be one sex or the other when they hatch.
Maybe that's gators.
Never mind...
