You're very lucky to be alive. Get well.

One of the big reasons for clots even in more or less healthy people is not walking enough.

A lot of people nowadays drive rather than walk. Deep veins in human legs are an engineering wonder (wall structure, valves, everything), but even so, they are strained by the constant pressure of the blood being pumped so high up back to the heart. It's the price we pay for being bipedal (along with bad knees and lower back pain). Over the years the strain accumulates, especially if you don't move enough or have to stand for a long time. Even if you don't have any connective tissue problems and eat healthy, you can develop varicose veins. Varicose veins get disrupted blood flow, uneven surfaces and other issues that trigger clotting. Clots can and will travel up and clog vessels in the lungs (and other organs).

If a long, noodle-like clot fails to decide which lung it wants to mess up, it gets stuck where the lung arteries fork, and you just collapse and die instantly.

Add connective tissue or clotting issues many people have, for whatever reason, and bad veins in the legs become a ticking bomb.

Muscles in the shins do A LOT to support the veins and actually help pump the blood up as they move. Toned shins keep your deep veins healthy. All you need to do is just walk more.

It is also a very good idea to get your deep veins checked regularly, at least once every few years. It's an easy, cheap ultrasound check that can be life saving, but for some reason doctors rarely order such ultrasounds preemptively. You can fix the varicose veins in time and monitor any clots before they cause trouble.

sorry for the rant.

Hang in there MsCat, my thoughts are with you.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

Glad to hear they have you on the road to recovery. Blood clots aren't anything to fool around with.

There was this bar that was so rough they checked you for a gun and if you didn't have one, they gave you one.

Tatiana, I've been active my whole life. Since Martha retired we have been walking 3 miles a day, then she goes to exercise class and I was going to the gym for an hour of workout. I had to stop walking because of breathing issues but was still going to yhe gym.

I did not mean you, PE can strike pretty randomly. Walking too little is a huge risk factor though frown

People here have mentioned covid and abnormal clotting after covid, many people I know are dealing with it as well as with vasculitis, both those who got vaccinated and those who didn't. Our vaccines were pretty conventional/oldschool, not the mRNA stuff, so it appears that it's a weird but relatively common reaction of the immune system to the surface proteins of the virus, regardless of how you come in contact with them, through vaccine or directly. Some competent people I know believe the virus was either engineered or selected for being so destructive, even though it's most likely impossible to prove at this point (in fact, my boss is a part of an interdisciplinary covid genomics research team). The bad brain fog that so many people (myself included) are struggling with after covid is probably also due to micro-clotting from vascular inflammation. Nothing you can do really to prevent that, but deep vein ultrasound checks are really helpful in catching the clots in big vessels before they tear off and travel up ((
