Anyone do this? I have a side shed on my shop, it’s dry but both ends are open .. any reason not to hang my stretched hides under it? Every picture of hides I’ve ever seen, they were inside a building..

Depends on the humidity level you have. You might have issues getting them to dry quickly if humidity outside is too high. If you cab put a fan on them that will help.

Are they dried? If so, I see no reason why, you can't hang them in that open shed.

Any kind of moisture that can get to them,( blown in mist, rain or snow will cause them to mildew.

I've often hung red fox pelts under a porch roof attached to my fur shed when it got too full inside. They were dried and turned fur side out. It was winter and some hung out there for 5-6 weeks before being shipped off to auction. I never encountered any issues other than recognizing the need for a bigger fur shed.

Eh...wot?

The OP said his shed was DRY. There shouldn't be a problem.

Kind of depends on what you are hanging. Fatty hides don't seem to pick up humidity too bad. Fur out hides are protected except the legs and tail. A weasel would rehydrate in high humidity.

I had my wife's first deer hide scraped and tacked up on the lean to wall drying years ago. Dogs got to it and shredded it and the reason I thought it may be worth keeping in mind.

I see OP is in Tennessee. I think there would be too much air humidity at the winter temps there. A pelt that has leather dried down properly will likely absorb moisture and mildew.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

I'm in central North Carolina, right now 11:23 AM the humidity is 24% outside, inside the house its a little higher at 33%. We do have high humidity in the summer but when winter starts our way it drops dramatically. I'm guessing the same happens in Tennessee, unless he's on one of the big lakes.

I've had rats that got a little mold on them when being stored. But a little WD 40 takes care of it.

I would be concerned about mice and other small varmits. Fur makes a nice warm nesting place.

And insects if it's not too cold for them.
