I have a Ruger Blackhawk and a Henry big boy in 45 colt. They both love copper bullets but I also shoot lead sometimes. The Blackhawk seems to group lead better then my Henry so far (the Henry is new). For all you cowboy action shooters and 45 colt enthusiasts my question is, do you ever find some lead loads from one manufacturer group better then ones from another manufacturer? I would imagine so. I know this to be true with foster slugs. 45 colt lead rounds are very affordable but so far my rifle doesn't seem to like them. More like my rifle hates them, at least the ones I have tried. The rate of twist on my rifle is 1:16 and the max bullet grain is 260. Also, please share what cleaners you find get lead out of a barrel the best please. Thanks again guys.

My advise is to pose this question on one of the Bullet Casting forums(The Art and Science of bullet Casting, Castboolits , correct spelling for that site). The reason for that is there are plenty of members on there that are dealing with the same things. I only own one Henry and it is a shotgun, but have found great satisfaction and accuracy casting bullets that actually fit the bores of my rifles and pistols, different manufactures use different twist rates and bore diameters and play a little loose with SAAMI standards. You shouldn't be getting much leading if the bullets actually fit your bore diameter.

For lead, get you some Chore Boy copper scouring pads from the grocery store. You'll find them in the cleaning area.
Unwind a few strands and wrap the strands around an old bore brush. Get enough strands on the bore brush to where it is pretty tight.
Put some Hoppe's on the brush and go to work on the bore. It will take the lead right out and won't hurt your bore.

Not surprised you can't get good accuracy out of those store bought cowboy lead bullets loads in your rifle.
The Cowboy lead bullets are purposely downloaded to the point that they can be safely shot in original 1873 revolvers as well as anything newly manufactured in .45 Colt. (SAAMI specs).
When you're selling ammunition to the public, one size has to fit all. For Cowboy shooting, you don't want all that much power or accuracy anyway; and you are trying to make them shoot accurately in a rifle.

Lead bullet accuracy is deep rabbit hole to go down.
I'm shooting a Rossi 92 in .45 Colt. I slugged the barrel in mine and found that the bore was .455 as opposed to the .452 diameter that is what the cowboy loads are that you are buying. I tweaked mine to where I can get it to shoot into under 2 inches at 50 yards.
Not a problem for me as I load and cast my own bullets. I made a .445 sizing die and bought an oversized mold.
Like I said, this is a deep rabbit hole to go down. I'm set up to load, mold my own bullets, have a good supply of lead and can tailor make the bullet to fit the barrel. If you're set up to load and would like to get into bullet casting you could probably get that Henry to shoot lead bullets well. Behold that, you might as well stick with jacketed bullets if you're chasing accuracy.

What osagan said on the chore boy, just make sure it is SOLID copper. Scrubs the lead right out.

I use windex with ammonia to clean with.

copper chore boy rip strands out of it with a pliers and wrap them around a bronze brush , that is the best scrubber for lead

are you looking to load of buy loaded ammo

lead bullets that are undersize for your bore are much more likely to lead a a barrel

a dead soft lead round ball in .457 these are for Ruger old army revolvers if you know any one with one , lube it up and pound it down your bore with a brass rod, then measure

45lc is 0.454 , 45 acp is 0.452 and 45-70 is . 458
see what size your barrel is then , pull a bullet and see what size it is from the ammo it doesn't like

I would guess , you will find your barrel larger than the bullet you pull.

Only thing i can add to the above is try different lube my contender likes blackpowder lube most lubed bullets bought today are formulated for higher velocity then 45 colt IMHO
Not talking about greasy muzzle loader lube but blackpowder cartridge lube

Slug your bore and go from there. You might be able to buy a mold that is the right diameter for your bore. Everybody is right on about Chore boy. Also the more you shoot the right bore size and right lead bullet hardness it will polish your bore until it's like glass. Most custom match barrels are lead lapped, that's what I'm doing every time I send a bullet done the bore. I have a H&R Buffalo Classic in 45/70, that barrel is the cleanest barrel after shooting I've ever had.
