A couple years ago a couple was on their first date. They made the mistake of riding their side by side on tribal land. A Ute Tribe fish and wildlife officer stopped them and issued a ticket. When she told them she was also impounding their ride the couple tried to drive away. She shot them both in the back. She was just sentenced to 3 years in prison followed by 3 years of supervised probation. The couple got married two years after they were shot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOk10LUh2qg

If you run from a cop you might get shot. Tribal or otherwise.

If you run from a cop you might get shot. Tribal or otherwise. Shooting a fleeing felon, that you have reasonable cause to believe is intent on doing bodily harm or kill someone if they escape, is one thing. Shooting someone for a totally nonviolent minor misdemeanor is quite another. In no world is that OK. And it is very uncommon!

I read this somewhere else. Maybe 24 hr. Campfire. Officer was wrong, they weren't on the res. Officer was charged as a Utah citizen Maybe. Not as a tribe member? It was on a road onTribal Land that non-tribals can drive a car or truck on. But they prohibit ATV's on all their land. Since it occurred on tribal land the prosecution was in federal court.

I like fishing in tribal waters. When this happened there was backlash from the unjustified shooting. Landowners blocked access for tribal members to get through their land to tribal property beyond. So the tribe terminated selling fishing permits to non-tribals and put out a notice that all licenses held by non-tribals were null and void. My fishing buddy and I were ice fishing on a tribal pond and a tribal game warden showed us a copy of the order.
They reversed the order a couple months ago and are again selling permits to non-members.
United we stand.

How do you get 3 years for what should be attempted murder? Wonder how the suit against the tribe will shake out. Most tribes are immune to lawsuits because in most cases you need the permission of the tribe to sue them in the first place, that’s why injury at casinos your just SOL wither you work there or are just a customer, I know several people that worked at the casino and were injured and several more that were hurt at a powwow and tried to sue all cases were thrown out because of sovereign immunity

If it occurred off the Reservation the County Sheriff deals with it if it happed on the reservation the FBI deals with it on a Native American vs White issue. You can be held by Native police until the Sheriff arrives but you cannot go to a tribal jail if you’re White. Off the reservation everyone can go to jail Native or White.

Did I read that right? This wasn't on tribal land?? I read one of the comments that said maybe it's time to play cowboys and Indians again. Makes me wonder if they've got a point. Some of the tribes are buying land off the rez then trying to enforce tribal law on those lands, I'm not sure if that's what happened here or not but it's a problem

Some of the Sioux tribes here have parcels of land not connected physically to the main reservations but scattered all over the State in some places it’s a jurisdiction nightmare. In some towns they have reservation land on one side of the street and State land on the other. Make it to the Rez the State/County guys can’t touch them.
Local tribe tried to buy land on the edge of town along I-90 to put up a casino it did not go through. Maybe purchased land does not fall under treaty guidelines.
