He spent a lot of time here in Maine with Maine guide Bill Sewall about 25 minutes north of me in Island Falls [Linked Image]
Theodore Roosevelt on a visit to Aroostook County c.1878. Pictured, L. to R.: Guide William Sewall, Wilmot Dow, and Teddy Roosevelt. In 1918 Roosevelt wrote of his trip - "It is over forty years ago that I first went to Island Falls and stayed with the Sewall family. I repeated the visit three or four times. I made a couple of hunting trips in the fall, with Bill Sewall and Wilmot Dow; and one winter I spent three or four weeks on snowshoes with them, visiting a couple of lumber-camps. I was not a boy of any natural prowess and for that very reason the vigorous outdoor life was just what I needed. It was a matter of pride with me to keep up with my stalwart associates, and to shift for myself, and to treat with indifference whatever hardship or fatigue came our way. In their company I would have been ashamed to complain! And I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was rather tired by some of the all- day tramps, especially in the deep snow, when my webbed racquets gave me "snowshoe feet", or when we waded up the Munsungin in shallow water, dragging a dugout, until my ankles became raw from slipping on the smooth underwater stones; and I still remember with qualified joy the ascent and especially the descent of Katahdin in moccasins, worn because, to the deep disapproval of my companions, I had lost one of my heavy shoes in crossing a river at a riffle. I also remember such delicious nights, under a lean-to, by stream or lake, in the clear fall weather, or in winter on balsam boughs in front of a blazing stump, when we had beaten down and shovelled away the deep snow, and kept our foot-gear away from the fire, so that it should not thaw and freeze; and the meals of venison, trout or partridge; and one meal consisting of muskrat and a fish-duck, which, being exceedingly hungry, we heartily appreciated." I always liked reading about V.E. Lynch hunting and trapping in Aroostook, Maine. I have a few of his books.

Yeah, but if you look at the book cover and the picture Wilmot looks closer in features.

I stayed in a cabin on Eagle Lake at Eagle Lake Sporting Camps that Roosevelt had stayed in, that was kinda cool. Super old cabins but well preserved. Cool thinking about the history of the place.

Teddy Roosevelt also enjoyed hunting in Southeastern Montana in the Big Horn Mtns when he was ranching in South Dakota .
On what now is the Crow Indian Reservation , which is still a great place to hunt or so my Indian friends tell me .

You're friend along the snare line .

Teddy's my boy I have all his hunting books in early edition and his Winning of the West. If you really want to learn about him read the books by Edmund Morris, The Rise of Theodor Roosevelt, Theodore Rex, and Colonel Roosevelt, GREAT READING, really help you understand his deeply.

I see they are building his Presidential Library in North Dakota. He owned two ranches there the article said. He said if it wouldn't have the time he lived in ND he would not have become President. He was President for like 12 years and one month. He was vice and I beleive McKinley was shot in NY Theo took over and won two more terms.

His good friend Bill Sewall and his family moved down and lived for years at Teddy's ranch in North Dakota when they first started the ranch.

Interesting story. TR wrote a few books and some great stories of his life from a young man till death. He was an interesting man that accomplished a lot in life over a short period.
