Just curious and trying to get some perspectives with more experience than my own. When you remake a coyote set after a catch, what is the thought process behind what type of set you remake it as. I kind of wing it and go based on gut feeling, location, etc but I am always looking to improve and this isn't a topic I've seen covered a lot.

im probably not near as experienced as you sir but, for me it depends how much the yote blew up the catch circle. if not real bad i typically remake the same type set i had there originally. if its blown up i like a trench step down style like ed schnieder calls the RJ set. i have caught more in the trench style after a catch then i have if i remake it like the original set. but im a guy that catches 10 to 15 a year running a couple dozen sets at most so take it for what its worth. not much experience just mine.

Most of the time it depends on what they leave me to work with. A chaff or duff set is always good, I've done a big badger hole style set on remakes as well. If it's really blown up and flashy, I'll punch in a set 10-15 yards down the way. You might not catch them in the remake, but there's always a good chance you will catch them in the new set.

95% of my remakes are step down dirt holes because no backing is needed. Lots of bait in the hole.

Right on, thanks guys. I do a mix of some walk thru's, bone flat sets or dirt holes for remakes, or whatever inspires me. I may add some step-downs to the mix and try those as well.

Like has been said, depends on what they leave you with.

If it was a dirt hole, odds are it can become one again.

Most of mine end up trash mounds or flat urine post type deals.

If it’s not blown out real bad I’ll just remake the double punch hole set I had. If it’s really blown out, chaff set. I usually only catch coyotes on the remake in the timber, hardly ever connect either them in the sage

There are coyotes that won't enter a 'torn up catch circle', especially when the last catch was during wet weather and when the catch is short chained.
Those two combined , and you end up with something that looks like a 'wallow'.
* Always good to move just outside that area, find or transplant a grass tuft and blend in a trap in front, with a fresh dropping (s) as eye appeal.
I don't use lure here and/or urine personally at this set, but you could. . .

LT Grey is what i believe the best way for a remake.

Remakes are definitely a regional/ season to season thing. Most years here remakes seem better than the original set but I've had a few years you couldn't buy one in a remake. I know there's some regions even good coyote trappers cant hardly ever catch in a remake.

I am like you Wild_idaho. I kind of just go with whatever feels right for my remakes. But if I have the ability and I am confident that there are plenty more coyotes in the area, I always add a fresh set just 10 feet away. I've found this leads me to the most success. Like LT said some coyotes won't go in the catch circle so I like to have a fresh set but also remake my original set as well. Majority of the time the next coyote is in the fresh set.

My experience has been a coyote will check out a remake of anything other than another coyote catch. If it's a remake of a previous coyote catch I'll need a fresh set nearby.

As has been said, it depends on what the coyote leaves you. I just pulled my line so we can go spend Thanksgiving with mom and because it was a bit much for my wife to be out that many hours with me but ended up catching 32. And easily half of them were in remakes.

Two set took three each. Same trap and same set. One was a T bone and the other a badger hole. The T bone I just raked up the grass and duff, drove the T bone in the ground in front of the trash mound and reset the trap. The badge hole was reopened and used again.

I gang set a dead cow. One of them the 3 coyote T bone. One a beef skull laying upside down with bait in the brain cavity, one a P post which never connected and one a flat set with a rock for backing. The skull and flat set both caught two apiece. Same thing there. Pulled up the trash around the rock and the skull and reset. Baited and lured the same as when first set.

Badger remakes are not a guaranteed coyote but as close to it as possible. They seem to really like badger catch circles.

Trail cameras and fresh snow have broke a lot of trapper’s hearts.
