DaNang, Nam 67-68 and north DMZ

DaNang 70-71.

Brother in law was there, 70 - 71. 101st airborne Screaming Eagles. Mortar man. Thanks to everyone who served.

My oldest Brother was there. (1970 / 1971) I knew he was there because my parents told me so. I had never heard him utter a word about being in the service.

When he died his memorial service was on Veterans day and the person conducting the local service included my brothers (Mike) story. When his wife and children were going through Mikes paperwork and other personal affects they came across some medals and certificates. They were a bronze star and a star with valor. One of Mike's children contacted the local Veterans organization with some questions about what they had come across.

At the Memorial service it was explained to us that Mike was a medic and on several occasions he went out of safety and into heavy combat to render aid to wounded soldiers.
One day in April and another in December the unit he was in was engaged in heavy combat and his actions and bravery to render aid resulted in acknowledgement with the two medals.

One thing I found shocking was that the life expectancy of a medic in combat in Vietnam was as low as 6 seconds.

I urge all of you to have conversations with your fathers and grandfathers. Actually talk to anyone you know that has been the service to get their stories so we don't forget what they have done to make everything we have and do possible.

Spent 10 days there in 2024. They love Americans. Met some North Viet Nam officers. They said they didn't want to fight but they would have been killed if they refused. They do not like Communism but tolerate it for now.

Three boy from my little home town went to Nam. One didn't come back. The other two were never the same.

For those that served there please accept my respect and heartfelt gratitude.
