I pulled up to a job today to replace a cold cellar/root cellar door. There are two township chippers trucks and a cop with his lights on sitting in front of the barn. I start backing down the yard towards the cold cellar when I hear a shot. Curiosity got the best of me so I walked around the barn to see what was going on. It was what I suspected. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/11/full-272-276321-img_5878.jpeg) A buck had been hit on the road and was crippled, cop finished him off.

It’s the opposite here, a regular Joe cannot do a mercy killing on a road-wounded deer. It has to be a law-enforcement officer or someone from the Pennsylvania game commission. You are allowed to pick up roadkill deer for consumption, but you have to contact the PGC within 24 hours for a permit, which is free.
However, if you want to keep the rack, you need to get a separate permit and they charge $10 per point, which I think is ridiculous.
Usually, the racks of nice roadkill bucks disappear within an hour or so. I’m fairly certain the large majority of those folks are not contacting the PGC and buying their expensive, $10 per point permit.
Eh...wot?

I called a crippled car hit deer some years back. The county sheriff said to just shoot it he made it clear nothing would happen to me for doing so. Let it lay and never took a name or asked any questions. Easy and simple!!
Give me a fish, I will eat for a day. Teach me to fish, I will eat for a lifetime

It’s South Whitehall Twp. You have to be rich just to afford the taxes there. The township has multiple reefer trucks, chipper trucks, all kind of equipment you would not expect a township that size to have. And they replace it every couple of years. It’s crazy.

we can not shoot them , a cop on duty or warden are the only ones that are allowed.
we have a online or phone in registration for road kill deer in WI
we didn't used to and used to have to wait a long time for a deputy to get to one from clear across the county it really was a waste of their time back then. but DNR wanted to have more control , couldn't trust people to register them , until one day they could trust us to register everything online.
I find the gutless method the way to go on all road kill , just don't even open up that cavity , let the tenderloins go it is sub pound of meat to keep all the rest clean or at least wait and do those last

Pretty big rack there. Did you get to keep the deer/rack Lugnut? I probably would have, but the cop knows me and I ain’t paying no $10 a point for an antler permit. I thought about keeping the meat, but it’s an older buck that was just passed the peak of the rut and I don’t know how long it laid there before the township guys found it and called the cop to dispatch it. I’m thinking it would not have been top-quality meat. I’m leaving for Deer Camp the end of this week where I’ll target some nice tender doe for the freezer. The cop said he was going to have the dispatcher call the Pennsylvania Game Commission and try to get them to come out and pick it up. I told him, “good luck with that.” The PGC isn’t known for being Johnny-on-the-spot when it comes to picking up roadkill deer. My buddy told me he wanted the head to do a euro-mount. If by some chance the rack is still there when I get back out that way after Deer Camp, I’ll probably take it then. But the cop had me drag the deer from up against the barn out to the edge of the road. In case the PGC did come to get it, so they could find it. So I highly doubt the rack will still be there. It’s probably gone already.
Eh...wot?

They use the number, of busts for not registering, as a percentage multiplier against the number that do register, to get their total kill numbers.
Scientifically clear as mud.

It’s probably gone already. it's a shame they make you pay for something that would save them cost. so dumb here whoever hits it has first dibs , after that who ever asks first and picks it up first watched some guys before we had online registration stop at a deer on the interstate , cut rack off , jump in and go , clearly not right. and yeah you could have put it to use but they leave it for people who won't follow the rules to come mutilate it and potentially make a bigger mess bureaucracy just has a hard time getting out of it's own way.

Dealing with crippled deer on the interstate is tricky here you don’t want them doing a bonsai run into traffic if the shots off. I went on an injured deer call on I-90 and found a dead deer and one laying next to it that looked pretty healthy but popped it to avoid traffic risks. When I got back to the office the CO asked what was wrong with it, I said bullets!

Either that's an old buck in his last year or he's ailing with something.
He is in very poor physical condition.....more than what the rut normally does to one of em.

I know you can't carry all the tools in the cruiser but , I sometimes think a load of buck shot is a better option than the pistol misses I have seen. lot less likely to be off with a 12ga than a pistol.

He had probably 20%-30% less body mass than I thought he should have had. Could be CWD although there's not been any reported in this area. Maybe the PGC will test him if they actually get around to picking him up but I doubt it.

One laid here for 3 days and nights before disappearing. It did not look good at all. These trophies can cause a lot of trouble.

My plumber just called me to tell me about a buck killed at the farm I was working at today. He said he drove by in the morning and the buck was just standing by the barn acting lethargic. He said one of his township buddies called him and said he heard a cop had finished it off.
Him and the buddy went out there and grabbed it, took it home a gutted it. He said he it had a stab wound under it's right front leg and when he cut through the diaphragm the liver was mush. He said it wasn't from the cop's bullet, that wound channel was further front.
He thinks another buck gored it and damaged the liver and that's what was making it sick. He tossed it in a bone pile, said his buddy is getting the head/antlers after the coyotes clean it up a bit.
He was surprised when I told him I was there when the cop shot it.
Eh...wot?

Around here it would have taken the cop more than one shot. I don’t know what the laws are here, but I won’t let them lay there suffering. You can get a permit free from the DNR and maybe the cops too to keep any or all the deer, but I’m not sure I’d call them if I had shot it to end its suffering. I should probably look into that in case the situation arises.
Pretty big rack there. Did you get to keep the deer/rack Lugnut? No you can’t shoot them then ask for a salvage tag, I know a guy that did that, the deer was stuck in a fence with a broken leg, he shot it then called the DNR, he got fined for poaching and had his gun taken.
