Does anyine else on here have a family that isnt close during the year but everyone wants to be fake and act like everyones so close and loving when Thanksgiving rolls around?

I dont mean to be a downer and i do wish my family was closer but theres been so much water under the bridge that the feelings just arent there anymore.

I love my family cause there my family but i have to be honest..in most cases id rather spend time with friends than my family on Thanksgiving.

For the last few years ive cooked Thanksgiving dinner at an elderly ladies house who has no family to speak and Jerry goes to Arkansas to trap yotes or beaver trapping.

This year hes gonna be beaver trapping cause its too wet right now in Arkansas.

He'll be going to Arkansas over Christmas

It works for us. I get my cooking fix ( which is what thankgiving is to me)and Jerry gets to trap cause hes off work.

We have thanksgivng supper together when he gets home that evening.

… what kind of problems yall have over the years Cathryn?

Sometimes .....like a funeral.....you just gotta go


Other times ......nope !!...do what you and Jerry wanna do

I have been very blessed in life to have a very good, loving family. We are very close. I talk to my dad and next youngest brother, probably a little more frequently than once a week. I talk to my mom, little sister and youngest brother probably two or three times a month, but those conversations last long. I've talked to my youngest brother for over 7 hours before. My youngest nephew, who just started at the same high school I went to, calls and talks to me two or three times a week sometimes. My other nephew and nieces call occasionally. My oldest niece will talk for hours. None of them live close.

Most of my aunts, uncles, cousins and their children are close too.

Diane's family is very different. Both of her parents are dead. She doesn't talk to all of her 4 siblings every year even. She's a lot younger than they are. All except her oldest sister, who always lived at home, until her parents died, were out of the house, while she was still very little.

Several in my family that probably should be closer but aren't. No bad blood. No history, just not a lot of shared interests. But getting together is still fun.

When my dad died.. i was completely left out of the choosing of his headstone even though i am the eldest of his kids and took care of him after his brain injury..and we were all supposrd to go and pick it out together.

I found out that it had been picked out and set on Facebook.....



My 1 st cousin on my moms side ran me over with a bike when i was 6 . My dad beat his butt and then everyone on moms side was mad at me. My cousin got killed when he was 18 and i was 8 trying to outrun the cops

When i movrd back from Va my mom said that my coming back ti WV ruined the holidays for her .


My dad always said that if ya didnt agree with everything she said she had no use for you. That i needed to just let her say whatever she wanted and for me to agree... thats not me.

If youre wrong, youre wrong and im not sugar coatin it.

Since my dad died i havent been to any thanksgiving dinners.

There are 1000s more stories where things un my family are just screwed up.

Mom's side everyone is to lazy to plan anything. And they all owe each other money, so it would look like a Reenactment at Gettysburg.

Dad's side, everyone is aging and lives far enough out that we do a combo Thanksgiving/Christmas get together in early December.

My wife, girls and inlaws are having a get together here at our house on Saturday.
They're all here now taking care of me, but the girls have to go to their sperm donors house on Thanksgiving.

We never did secular holidays. But thanksgiving everyone has off work and turkey was cheap so we ate. Back then it was simple. Walked across the street to my grandparents. Very non traditional. Fried potatoe wedges and boiled pepperoni hunks (don’t knock it till you try it…Pap was Russian and grandma was Croatian and they said only Italians eat it un boiled)

Now I have two stepdaughters , a grown niece with an extended family and a boyfriend of her own.
We are gonna try to get together at my brothers house but my niece may not arrive until very late. Life got very complicated .

… I hear you Cathryn … my wife’s mom is from WV .. they got plenty of drama too

.. latest one being her parents died and left the house in point pleasant to her younger sister … who just didn’t bother paying the taxes and lost it

I'm just rolling with whatever the wife wants ....easier this way


Her family will have some sorta pot luck turkey dinner .....probably 50 or 60 people


Used to be over 100 , but people are dying off


I'll suffer through, eating only store bought packaged food . No homemade nothing , nada , zip , zilch
