I have shot them when hit buy a car. Had a Game warden show up to one. Short narrow shoulder guy real barny . Told me not to shoot them and wait on them next time. I told him it took an hour and a half for him to get there I'm not going to watch one flop tell it dies or wait that long. He wanted to argue then said I can see where it's booger up on its neck so I won't skin it to look it over I can tell it's been hit.I pointed out you could also see the busted turn single and head light pieces in the road, and offered him my place to hang and skinn it out if he wanted to skin it. I learned if you call and don't tell them you shot it a sheriff will come out and they don't care if it's been shot when they get there. But to avoid any problems a knife to the throat works just fine. try to claim it was knife killed not hit by a car first would be a stretch. The one I hit a few weeks ago got the knife and left on the road. Had to get to work and no time to mess with it. Was close to a house at night didn't want to wake them with a shot.

Good to know. I figured as much. I have my CO's number in my phone so if its huge I may call first and have him come.

When I looked at that job it was subcontract.
I then quickly ran away.

It is PennDOT’s job on state roads. It’s the PGC‘s job on all other roads.

So, so called “Sportsmen” will sit and watch an animal suffer? Sorry, I’m gonna put it out of its misery.

Easy decision. Put it out of its misery immediately. I wouldn't even consider calling the Sheriff ot game warden.

Wife hit a deer last year. I called the sheriff to get a permit after I killed it. I dont know what the law says about that but the deputy never said anything. Thinking cops are better marksmen than the average hunter is ridiculous. Local LE used to host a pistol competition to raise money for special olympics. Very few were what I would even call adequate. A few were amazing. A big bunch made me hope I never had to depend on their firearm skill to get someone out of a jam.

If you use a rimfire for these road kill deer the fine is extra.

I used a little 380 CC gun.

We're also not allowed to finish road killed deer but I have saw where one was suffering and a shopping bag happened to get wrapped around its nose...

I guess bùt I live in the middle of nowhere and butcher my own. But I seriously doubt I would eat a deer from the road. We have no shortage of deer.

I've salvaged a few road kills...they often look ok, till you skin them....but there's usually one side worth taking, sometimes....Frankly, it's not worth the bother, unless you just strip out the backstraps...you can do that in a couple minutes and move on.....

It depends where a road-kill got hit. A lot are not worth messing with, some are.

Last winter a guy nailed one with his pick up truck up the road from me. It was dark and I walked up through the woods and stood in the shadows creeping while he inspected his truck and muttered a few curses before driving off.

It was a yearling, a button buck and it had been hit in the head and neck. It had a broken neck. I drug it into the woods, gutted it then drug it to my shop and hung it for a few days before processing it. It was good venison.

Pick up roadkill here for draw stations in the river breaks they work great in the heavy thick cedar draws or to prebait an area to draw in predators. I call them in to my CO and add a photo more for peace of mind than anything else. The racks go to game and fish especially the larger ones. Haven’t moved deer lately more than a mile or two with all the die off issues going on with them no sense in spreading it around or landowners thinking I’m doing that.

A carcass and a camera will get you some nice photos and an idea what’s in the area, a carcass is just another tool if you use it right.

I have shot several road hit deer to put them out of their misery. I've never called the game warden. Except for one time.

North Texas panhandle and the deer was standing just inside the fence on a wildlife refuge. I think it was a federal refuge, but could have been state. I don't remember. I shot it right in front of a state conservation agent... At his direction. All he was carrying at the time was a pistol. I was chasing white geese and had a 10 gauge with triple B's. Walked up from 20 yards away and shot that big mule deer in the head. That agent had chased down the guy that hit it. He was drunk and got a DUI out of it.

Turns out he had what appeared to be a deep stab wound under his front right leg that angled back and punctured the liver. His liver was a soft gray mush. We think that's what was making him sick. We think he might have been gored by another buck.

He was seen standing in the same spot he died three hours earlier.

Years ago, my buddy and I were on our way to the duck marsh. Of course, I had my bow in the truck. We came around a corner and saw some cars parked with their flashers on. We stopped and could see where this nice 8-point buck was caught in the fence, So I did the humane thing I strung my bow and shot it. we got the deer out of the fence gutted it and I tag it we loaded it in the truck and went on our way. I think I did the right thing legal or non-legal.
