Recent bear sightings have occurred in Northern Japan, including in Hokkaido and Akita prefectures. According to the Japan Times, the country’s Environment Ministry noted this month that in October 2025 bears attacked 88 people, and there were seven fatalities. Between April and October of this year, the source claims bears killed or injured 196 people in Japan, with the majority of incidents (56) happening in Akita. There have been over 10 reported deaths during that period. Reportedly, October and November are when bear attacks in Japan are most common, as the animals prepare for hibernation.

There’s two kinds there are Asian black bears and in northern Hokkaido they have brown bears as well, they have a liberal hunting season for them but not many get taken, most hunters there target deer and wild pigs

The gun regulations are horrible to get through took me almost a year to get a shotgun permit, and to get a rifle one you have to have had a shotgun permit for seven years

Most hunters there keep it very quiet due to the negative view of killing things, but my neighbors were always grateful for gifts of deer and pork meat and I never got any negative comments from them but then most of them were older people

Apparently the Japanese gov't sent the military in to kill a bunch of bears...
