we have pasty here also, this is a pie, normally made from 3 meats and mash potato, just enough potatoes, to hold it all together, the meats are venison, beef, and pork, all ground, and browned before they go into the pie,

Essentially a Cornish pasty or a redneck stromboli! I have used pie crust and beef or venison stew in them, good eatring

sounds like a double crust pot pie but with pork , beef, venison ground
if you use a top only bread it becomes a shepherds pie
my son took a pie class through extension a 5 years ago I have the recipe to give you a base for the pie crust and such , but you will have to figure out how to to make it like your mother in laws.
probably brain storm the flavors you remember before looking at anyone else's recipe , then get your ratios from the other recipe and make it your own.
too many people look at a recipe as a technical drawing with exact measures and spices , but spices vary so much you need to look at it as a rough sketch and then make it your own by noting what you used and liked and then put notes on what you would change next time while you are tasting it.

Roy is a yooper, he knows what a pasty is. What he is talking about uses mashed potatoes and looks like a pie. No mashed potatoes in pastys, just diced potatoes. And yes, you need lots of ketchup with a pasty.

The few times I've eaten them, I thought they were pretty bland. I guess they'd fill you up, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat one unless I was hungry. They are a lot better with tomato gravy.

My understanding of what pasty’s purpose in life was is that the pie shell was a container for meat, onions, potato, and at the worst rutabaga as a packable lunch for miners. The miners would discard the shell and eat the inner ingredients.
I just typed “pasty pie recipe” into my search bar and there are recipes. Good luck!
in Cornish Wisconsin mines it was Lead so yes discard the crust , also a tale about feeding the tommyknockers so they don't cause mischief. also they should be hard enough that if dropped down a mine shaft wrapped in a cloth and tied it wouldn't break apart they are a drier thing than the pie he is talking about. pasties are generally salt and pepper only for seasoning , folks need to understand , these cultures , a potato already had a lot of flavor so salt and pepper was about all that was needed. not like some places where food is half seasoning. I prefer rutabaga in my pasty

Yooper buddy says you’re supposed to eat pasties with about a 2:1 ketchup to pasty ratio. This seemed like nonsense to me. Can anybody corroborate? I love mine with a good splash of Heinz 57. I know some prefer gravy, but its always ketchup for me....

My wife makes something that is like a casserole. It has sliced potatoes, onion, carrots, green beans, hamburger, with cheese on top baked. That's my favorite. I like shepherd's pie too.
At the gym someone asked me why I'm sitting on a stationary bike? I'm going downhill, dude. Mind your own business!
