Last several years I spend a lot of my time hunting public land so I can take buddies out to the private places I have. Took two buddies today who haven’t been able to kill anything yet this year. Movement was pretty slow this morning. One buddy got a button buck. His second deer ever so he was excited. We called it quits around 9:30 and I told my buddies let’s go stalk the firebreak around the clearcut before we leave. We made it about half way and the lead buddy was about 20 yards in front of me when I saw this deer about 30 yards in front of him stepping out into the firebreak. He didn’t see the deer, so I gave a hushed “Hey!” The deer just stared at us as he shouldered the rifle, clicked off the safety, and pulled the trigger. The buck flipped over backwards and never made it out of the firebreak. I waited until the dust settled before letting the shooter know that we were about as far from the truck as we could get and that the drag was gonna be long
