I was visiting with some friends the other day, and came upon a box of old traps. There were a few really nice traps in there, some #1 newhouses and a couple old triumphs and Blake and Lambs. The coolest thing in there was what I would call a dogless gin trap, not sure if that's the proper name. I looked it over and the only mark I can find is "350" on the spring near the jaw. I'm guessing that it's European made, but that's about all I can guess on. If any of you would happen to have any knowledge on the trap, I would greatly appreciate you sharing. Hope you're all having a good day. [Linked Image]

Not a gin trap. It is an oval base tilt-pan (sometimes described as a traverse pan). Made in Europe and popular during early French-Canadian fur trade.

I have no idea what the number means or when it was applied.

Neat little trap.

I thought about that backroadsarcher, this forum just gets more traffic so I figured I'd throw it in here first.

You probably got it off some senile old man for pennies on the dollar.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Yes 160. I tucked it in my jacket when he wasn't looking, then remembered that I had to be somewhere and left quickly. Best part is that later that same day, I got to steal a trap off the guys boy. It was a good day of adding to the collection. [Linked Image]

Sam it looks like you did pretty good. Be careful it doesn't get out of hand. A person runs out of places to hang them.

Backroadsarcher, it's already started to get bad. 160user was actually one of my first bad influences on traps collecting. I am fortunate to have a good woman that enjoys looking at traps on the wall. We've got them hanging in several spots throughout the house, with a bunch more in my shed. [Linked Image]

I shortened this to make it more accurate.

She's a good woman and can believe 160 is a bad influence.

My wife is starting to believe it too.

You are right backroadsarcher, I couldn't have dreamed up a better gal for me. The one problem is that she keeps wanting me to buy 114s. Good problem to have, but it's going to lead to a bunch of overtime for me.

I got one years ago from Tim Caven's private stash. When I sold my collector traps years ago, I sold it and have always regretted it.

I looked it up in my trap collector's book and it said maker unknown, and it was called a loon trap. Very old and was hand forged.
