Is that time again. My 15 year lod had the handle give out on my maul. Typically the yellow Fiber glass handle Trumper from real king last me 4 to 6 years before the handle goes from sun and shock. I Like them because they are cheap and last reasonable well. I have 2 2.5lb fiskers boys ax and a nice 3.5 lb long handled one as well. The boys have out grown the boys ax now they are more of a hatchet roll filler.

I hear ya on the boys out growing the boys ax. I like to start and keep kids on a handle long enough to hit the ground if they miss the mark. Until they get real hand running an ax anyway. As much as I hate an ax head hitting the ground, it’s better than a shin or foot.

I have been looking at whisky river trading out of Escanaba MI , they make wood , I like the feel of wood but yes you end up replacing them.

better practices and oiling them help

I have heard some guys are all about thier Fiskars 27 inch light and they warrantee them when you break them

most of the mauls on the fiberglass handles don't have much of an edge or great geometry just sort of there and not great but heavy

I would probably go with this
https://counciltool.com/shop/other-...ls/7-lbs-axe-eye-splitting-maul-ol-no-7/
if I was looking for a good maul
then order a couple of their replacement handles

remember no beating the pole on a ax
that is how my son broke my last two ax handles

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I have a "monster maul" bought 40 years ago, heavy?, yes, but with the right technique you can split a LOT of wood quickly, steel handle is welded to the head, you ain't breaking this one....

I wish they would put an oval in the handle for easy alignment. Do you have trouble aligning the splitting edge with the round handle?

Actually, the end of the handle does have a slight oval, This was the original MM, never really had a problem though..once you grab onto that thing you don't change your grip!, lol

I started the oldest boy out with wood handle boys ax(all I could dfind back then) at 6. I could not leave the youngest out but at 4 he could not handle much so gotna hatchet. I would split easy splitting stuff down so it would split very easily for them. intact Wife pointed out she is still cooking on all that cheery wood they split down to kindling all these years later. It's almost gone. For a few years it was part of my wood splitting time. All the easy splitting stuff got busted a bit and sat to the side and the boys would come out and bust it down to tooth picks.

As much as I like wood the last wood handle ax I bought the handle split about 18" long back to front down the grain of the handle about 10" back from the head on around my 3rd swing. When I get several years out of synthetic I now pick them every time

Good stuff PF.

That sounds like how my boy and two girls came up! Still funny to watch people’s faces when one of the girls grab an ax and split a few for the river wood stove. And they both have little ones of their own now. I’m sure the grandkids will learn the same way.

I prefer a wood handle for a maul. I also use fiberglass handle. Some hardware stores sell a plastic sleeve to protect a wooden handle that 3" up from the head.

Same here, there is a !earning curve, read instructions, ya, instructions on a splitting maul. lol. They work good if used correctly. Man killer if used like a regular maul.
