Coal furnaces being used to heat houses. Used to be a very common smell around here every fall/winter. My grandpa burned coal until sometime in the early 90s when dad was no longer able to get the grade of coal he wanted.

I don't think I know what that smells like. I know coal furnaces used to be common, but I've never seen in operation that I recall.

It’s silage for me. Forked tons of the stuff when I was a boy.

Neighbor burned coal in his outside boiler until a couple years ago. Would get a tractor trailer load every year.
Said he can't get it anymore. Maybe price or another stupid NY law I'm not sure

Hedge burning in a stove or fireplace on a cold day. Branding smoke is another favorite

Flue cured tobacco curing in a wood fired log barn about the time it is finished. The cured leaf has a nice smell as well.

I loved the smell of freshly fired Remington or Winchester paper shotgun shells on a crisp November morning pheasant hunt.

Yes fresh cut silage is the best.

First time I smelled coal smoke, I was trudging up to an enormous tent . I was amazed by how much heat that little stove put out.

I also have to agree with the Silage fragrance.

we moved into the "haunted house" when I was in third grade...had to learn how to check/shake down/feed the coal furnace when I got home from school (Mom and Dad got home later than school let out).

Fortunately my grandpa was soft on us grandkids and we did not have to shovel and carry out the clinkers like he made my dad and uncle when they were younger. And by the time we grand kids came along he had installed a stoker so we never had to load the furnace either.

The production of pepermint and the distilling to produce oil during the 90's .......

I heated my house with a coal furnace for 15 years. Got good free stoker coal at the mine.
