These pics are from Thanksgiving Day just outside of Dallas, Texas. My question for you southern guys, Do you find small cats often in trapping season or is this bunch outside of the norm. I would guess these kittens were born in September.

I think it happens everywhere. Just not very often.

… had a buddy of mine catch one about the same size around the same time a couple years earlier

caught a kitten 6.7 lbs last season in Feb. I think the breeding window is very long on a sow cat

I caught several one winter, three I think pulled the traps before mama showed up! That was in NY,90 something, my memory isn't the best!?

Just a thought, but I know taxidermy will pay some good money for the little farts. In case they're not releasable...

Its not good when catch them here this time of the year and later. Things get frozen.

My best sale one year was a kitten caught in late Dec maybe January. Was about the size of a house cat. Sold it to a taxidermist who wanted to enter a taxidermy contest with an adult and kitten mount.

I have seen them that small several times over the years while deer hunting.

Like everything else, there will be outliers that will be the exception

I’ve caught 2 really small ones over the years. One in n Arizona and one in Arkansas.

Being induced ovulators, theoretically they can breed at any time.

A late or outlier litter up north is pretty much screwed, not so much down south.



Just look at ya’lls deer rut and how spread out that is. That can’t happen up north.

I caught a pregnant sow, the middle of Dec, back in the nineties. Dispatched her, threw here in the truck, and saw her belly jumping around, but blew it off as muscles. Skinned that evening, and had two little kittys in her, within a couple weeks of being born. Talked to the state furbearer biologist soon after, and he said they can have young any time of the year, but that in that case, I probably saed them from a cruel death. It goes with the territory!
