Believe it or not, I miss the smell of Gusto. It was a staple on my traplines in Alaska for many years. I have no use for it now but have been tempted to buy a small bottle just for nostalgia.

We burned coal in a furnace in the basement when I was a kid. The coal was from a small mine about 30 miles away. When they shut the mine down we used a lot of pionion pine and some cedar (not a true cedar but Utah Juniper). I do remember the coal smoke smelling okay. But the cedar smoke was my favorite - a very pleasant sweet smelling smoke.

Just the thought of it took me back to nights when I was a teenager. I would ride the bus to Panguitch to watch our teams play basketball or wrestle. The bus would drop me off at the top of the street. The stars always seemed so bright on those cold nights and I would always hear mallards calling down on the river below the house. And the smell of the smoke was so inviting when I got close to the house.

It's cool how smells are such a powerful trigger for memories.

United we stand.

Most of the buildings on Ft . McCoy were still heated by coal in the winter of 90-91 when we deployed for the gulf War.
All in all, I prefer the smell of diesel exhaust and cigarette smoke.

I'm just a soul whose intentions are good. O Lord please don't let me be misunderstood.

Grand parents home had coal burning furnace. While I can recall the coal bin and the sound the feed auger on auto stoker/hopper. I was to young when my grand parents passed to recall the smell of all that.
My child hood home was heated by two burner oil burning Super Flame. The old cottage was heated by single burner Super Flame. The smell of those stoves back firing on a windy day. The smell of deseal from a bad situation I found myself in later in life. Has now become a smell number one on my dislike list. Also that smell can be a trigger to my PTSD. I never know when or where it will get me. Don't happen as often as years have gone by. Still get set off at weird times with just deseal pickup truck going by. Life goes on.
I find the smell of skunk, wood smoke, cow Manure, the river, calming so there is that.

Mac

I'll add another. The smell of this reminds me of walking into grandmas house.

My mom used to tell a story of taking me to a relatives house for the first time when I was just a tiny baby and I had a rash or something on my face. The relative, my great aunt, told my mom she could fix that rash and proceeded to get out a jar of Lestoil and a rag and was going to wipe my face with it. She said she caused a big family ruckus when she told her not to touch my face with that. grin grin

Cherry wood on a fire, the smell of my grandmothers kitchen this time of year, the smell of a slat marsh anytime, the smell of ferns and moss in the mountains
