I am spending every chance I can to continue my preparation for the trip. Every trap is inspected for pan tightness, proper trap tags, functioning swivels and closed J-hooks. I don't set a specific pan tension but rather make sure the pan is almost loose enough to fall with it's own weight. Once set, the pressure of the springs will give me a tension I can live with. Once the cable stake is attached, I place the trapnin a gallon sized ziplock bag with a crumpled up wax paper pan cover. Each time I grab a couple of traps from a tote, I know there is already a pan cover with it. I keep the pan covers crumpled until they are ready to be used. This keeps them from blowing away in the Kansas wind. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/12/full-11902-277526-img_6149.jpeg)

] Pretty country. I have a family place just across the line, South Central NE. I have plans to do what you are doing there someday.
You aren't far from where they wrote "home on the range" in 1870ish if you get West a little. Neat place to check out but I'm sure you stay busy.
That looks a lot like where we go!

I calculated the weight of my waxed dirt to be 1,900 ponds. I kind of want to add another 100 lbs to make it an evenTon! I know the dust bowl swept the dirt from this area in the past so I am trying to do my part to bring it back! When I load the truck, the first thing in is two coolers full of waxed dirt. They will be utilized on our first set days so to avoid excess work they will ride right where they will be needed. Then i add a couple totes of my traps for the same reason. When we get to camp and unpack, the dirt and traps will already be there.

I look forward to being part of this trip every year. I am a guest on this adventure. Kids get all excited about Christmas this time of year, I get just as excited about what our next advwill bring us. The country is so beautiful, the local people are fantastic, oh, and the trapping is pretty good too! I have been getting things prepped and ready to go. By Christmas day I will have things "staged " and ready to be loaded in the truck. I have been making meals and freezing them to make things quick, simple and easy once we start running our line. I just can't wait!

Frozen coyotes are much more work to skin. Our set up doesn't allow us the place to thaw coyotes out very easily if it is cold outside or maybe not at all. Most years have had some sub-zero temperatures. The snares fit a specific purpose but I have found that a lot more of our line is suited for footholds. I still set some snares to get better at it. (Snaring where I live doesn't work well. Michigan's cable laws are too restrictive.)

Truck and trailer are packed. I will try to sleep until about midnight:30. Joe will drive here and we will get his stuff loaded up. We plan a 2;00 AM departure. We will have breakfast in Des Moines Iowa around 10:00 AM. We should arrive at the lodge in Kansas around 3:00 PM. If you see us on the road, make sure to get our attention. We will certainly stop to say Hi! ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/12/full-11902-280134-img_6669.jpeg)

It was a long wet windy drive but we made it.
The temperature along the route climbed to 54 degrees and then it was 17 degrees by the time we got out of Nebraska.
We unpacked and were able to each get one set in the ground before dark. Now we will get some dinner, sleep and be ready for a full day of setting traps tomorrow.

I'm just curious to how fast you have to drive to get there by 800pm on the 28 th of Dec. when you wre going to leave on Dec 28th at 200am. thanks Larry We were just never more than a couple mph over the posted speed limit, especially in the 75 mph areas. We left at 1:50 AM Eastern time and arrived at the lodge at 4:55 PM Eastern time. That is roughly a 15 hour trip. We stopped in Des Moines for 1.5 hours to have breakfast with a friend there. That brings travel time down to 13.5 hours. We made 4 fuel stops that totaled around 30 minutes. That drops our driving time to 13 hours. 852 miles in 13 hours is an average of 65.5 mph.

Was too tired last night to make a post? We had our first set day and are feeling good about our progress. Spent a lot of time talking to the local folks that have became friends of ours over the years. We always re-establish our permissions before going on any of the properties. It may not sound like a lot but we each got in around 20 sets on the first day. Some years it was 12 and last year we had 23 each for reference. We try to make our sets sparsely on the properties and want to get gear in the ground over a larger area. We think of our line like a net. We want a larger net at first and are not as concerned about how fine it is. As we start checking, we will fill in the net a little by adding additional sets to the properties. We feel this gives us a better chance at different target animals. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/12/full-11902-280354-img_6722.jpeg)

Another nice skunk, and glad that eye wasn't any worse.
Is that a miss on a coyote, or a guide? I seem to remember seeing prints in your sets from earlier.

Nice catches and I see the coyote pretty much stepped on the pan and got lucky
Speaking of luck, lucky you didn't lose an eye! Another nice skunk, and glad that eye wasn't any worse.
Is that a miss on a coyote, or a guide? I seem to remember seeing prints in your sets from earlier. I made the track in the dirt pattern right on the pan. In this set, there were already tracks there before I set the trap. I don't usually do that but it seemed fitting with the other tracks already there.

Locust is wicked! You could have had a much worse outcome. Worst place i have ever taken one is in the knee while doing tree work. The only positives I have seen are bees love them and mourning doves nest in them. Awesome pictures every year!

Around here cats have been showing up on camera regularly but rarely a coyote.
We have a lot of osage orange (hedge apple) which also has thorns. When those poke me its a painful lump for several days. Much worse than even a larger cut.
Keep up the good work. They're talking about snow Friday!

Went to North central Kansas for several years Turkey and Deer hunting, found out right away there are only 3 kinds of roads. Hard roads, Gravel roads and MUCK roads! Not going anywhere when they turn to muck. And it doesn't take much rain to turn them to muck.

Any road with a house on it is graveled. The dirt roads are access to pastures and row crops. Graveled roads are great. Dirt roads are just dirt. Drive on dirt roads when its muddy you dont just cover your vehicle in mud you rut up the road. Wanna anger locals rut up the dirt roads after a rain. A 4 wheeler and a trailer are good tools trapping here. Haul the 4 wheeler as close as you can then run traps with it. Load it back up and go to the next property. You wont tear up pastures or dirt roads.

A buddy called me yesterday. Trapping a deer lease. Somehow managed to slide off in a pond overflow ditch. Rained all day. Hard. I got him pulled out with the winch. Luckily he did not damage his pickup but when pulling it out the driver side rear tire was at least two feet off the ground as it came up. Trying to get back up the hill was pretty iffy. Was worried might have to winch myself up it then pull him up.

Do you trap on public land or how do you go about getting permission We originally started trapping for an outfitter that wanted help removing fawn killers and egg eaters. After years we became friends with many locals and permission has found us.

Today we were on the line an hour before light. We took advantage of the frozen conditions to access a few properties that we had to remove traps from due to the rain. We will at least get two good checks out of them before the weather warms up during the nights. We watched a coyote run along side us on one farm we trap. I ended up with a nice skunk today and Big Joe got another coyote. We contacted the Game Warden and had our bobcats sealed today. Still a few more check days to go and we are feeling optimistic. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/01/full-11902-281691-img_7591.jpeg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/01/full-11902-281692-img_7593.jpeg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/01/full-11902-281693-img_7592.jpeg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/01/full-11902-281694-img_7596.jpeg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/01/full-11902-281695-e1d9637d_8d90_4788_a05c_43918472af39.jpeg)

I want thank everyone that has followed along and commented on this thread. You are the ones that motivate us to share our adventures. On our last check day (pull day) Joe was able to connect with 2 more coyotes. One of them was littered with mange. We both have different methods on pull day but being speedy and organized is something we both value. I throw all of my catch traps into separate totes from the ones that didn't make a catch. Once we were finished pulling we contacted the game warden to get Joes last bobcats sealed. Then the process of tearing down the skinning rig began which was followed by the meticulous task of packing the trailer & truck. We fueled up the truck and said our last goodbyes to our friends in the area. The plan was to go to sleep, wake up at midnight and leave for home at 1:00 AM. This would put us back to my house around 3:00 PM. Before going to sleep, I saw a weather report that called for 12-24 inches of snow in southwest Michigan. The timing of the snow had is concerned so we skipped the sleep and left at 5:00 PM. Most of the drive was good but the bad weather prediction was valid and we found ourselves creeping down those portions of the freeway amongst the endless big rigs. Visibility was extremely low but we worked our way through there safely. We finally arrived at my house around 8:30 AM and quickly transferred Joe's gear from my truck to his. he had another hour and a half to drive to finally get himself home. Getting back to normal life feels good but those great long line memories continue to wander through my thoughts. We were able to get more video this year so I intend to patch it all together into a YouTube video. I will share that here when I am finished but it may be a couple of months. Thanks again for following! ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/01/full-11902-282621-img_7936.jpeg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/01/full-11902-282622-img_7939.jpeg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/01/full-11902-282623-img_7940.jpeg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/01/full-11902-282624-img_7938.jpeg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/01/full-11902-282625-img_7932.jpeg)

Thanks Mark! Enjoyed the ride along. And I fully understand the road conditions in KS, having dealt with them during my spring turkey hunts out there.

I have always wanted to do a road trip trapline, my question is what do you look for for areas to trap? Are you guys just picking large properties on onx and getting permission from the landowner?

I have always wanted to do a road trip trapline, my question is what do you look for for areas to trap? Are you guys just picking large properties on onx and getting permission from the landowner? We started trapping for a outfitter that was losing feed to raccoons and deer & turkeys to predation. He putbus up and provided access to his leases. He got us on a few other properties as well. We joined coffee time where the local farmers stop and became friends with a lot of land owners. They have offered their properties to us after they got to know us. Being part of the local community has been great but it had also provided us with more places to trap.

I can't begin to say how blessed I feel for being a part of this adventure. I look forward to this trip like a kid looks forward to Christmas. It seems each year is slightly different from the last. Crop changes, huge brush piles gone. Tall grass is now super short, hot wire where we used to drive. These are minor changes. The landscape stays the same, the animals are still there. It may take us a few days to figure out where they are traveling. I learned a huge lesson this year. A lesson taught to me by the animals. I believe i was using too many baits and lures. I had what I considered great success with just a few. And those baits and lures have been successful in the past. Next year, I'm shrinking my bait and lure to just a very few. I will have plenty extras as a back up. These trips are truly amazing. I never take one for granted. I hope Mark let's me ride along again next year!

Remember, a YouTube video will follow this year. It will be the first time I have documented the trip so I have a lot to learn! It will still be fun to put it together. In a few short weeks I will be recovering from a minor surgery so I should have some time to get it finished. Here is a link to the opening for the video! https://youtu.be/ucD6Ta1XZnw?feature=sharedI cant wait to share it all with you!
