10 years as a “professional student” at University of Buffalo…wrote grants that paid for it all…lots of time traveling the country and mapping out bedrock in the small streams in the Rushford, NY area.. earned all my degrees in geology. Just retired after 26 years as a senior geologist/senior project manager working in the environmental arena. Very rewarding work! And as faith would have it, I’m in the process of closing on a cabin and property that I mapped bedrock on while doing my thesis and the owner remembers me!

Wiss Miss, do you remember "Minnie creek" that flowed through the campus? I attended UWEC 1967- 69 majoring in journalism. I wrote a fictional story about a mink that prowled it's course to the Chippewa river. My journalism professor told me to stick to more relevant stories of the day. What did he know anyway, he taught the class half drunk and was a classic liberal of the time. I disliked college as much as high school. Like others have said than " life happened" and I never looked back.

I attended UB for one semester Dino. But I was more interested in partying than studying at that point in time and I didn't make the cut, lol.

Angela, UB was in a wonderful part of town lol

I spent 6 weeks there at baseball camp, it was a blast

Unfortunately, that's when I realized I was too small for the majors

Strange thing is Ole Miss and Suny offered me full scholarships after

I turned both of them down

We were there at the same time. For me - 1965 to 1969. Graduated in 1969. Those were the “ good old days”.

Four years at Oregon State U majoring in Ag. I should have been trapping full time 1975-9 instead of wasting time in classes.

yotetrapper--congratulations on your accomplishment and acceptance to another program. Even though it's great to keep learning throughout our lifetime, around my late 40s-early 50's I struggled to find any desire to complete even continuing education coursework to maintain my certifications but I do find it impressive when others still have the drive to do such. I retired a couple years back and at the time was doing work at a Big 10 university. One interesting thing I saw as a result of covid was the changes that happened to the academic world regarding online learning. Way more institutions offering online options and a much greater acceptance of that process within the academic community. I've never seen an employer that didnt offer some version of tuition reimbursement/educational assistance but most of my career was spent in large fortune 500 companies. However, those educational funds are a budgeted line item which almost always goes unspent. When you follow the money trail in the private sector, the $ tend to flow to middle and upper level positions where the flexibility exists or is given to allow traditional coursework to be pursued. That often doesnt happen so easily for other positions but online options are an interesting fit particularly in certain fields/subject matter. I believe we will see more of it in the future.

Keep us updated on how you like your next adventure. Most people I know, and myself included, find advanced business degree programs to be much less theoretical and more case study/application based in both group and individual settings.

Congratulations yotetrap. Anyone that does not like your degree can shove it. It's great you were smart enough to take advantage of your employer covering the cost and dedicated enough to stick with it.

Myself I went to University of Southern Indiana for a few semesters with the intent to be a high-school history teacher. But Looking at it financially I would have taken on some debt to get a job that paid less than what I was making Ironworking and there were not a lot of high-school history teaching jobs even available. So I dropped.

I did get a useless Associate degree from Iv tec through the Ironworkers apprenticeship program.

If I had the time either would like to and could benefit frome some business classes. BUT would really love to get to go to the Bigblack birds school of bees for sometime during a summer.

A couple younger trappers I know from theWTA did some ADC beaver trapping on Minnie creek last year for UWEC. One of them posts on here frequently. I Caught my first beaver, coon, and muskrat on the Chippewa river in town in the sixties. Back then we could trap inside the city limits. Those truly were "the good old days ".
