Does anyone use the coal covering that NO BS sells or something similar on their trapline? What are your experiences with it? I run a small line a few hours away over our cat/Fisher season and they restarted one of the coal mines on the property. I'm thinking of asking to buy a few buckets where they crush/sort the coal but I'm unsure of what I'm looking for. Is it just coal dust? The pic on Kendall's site looks brownish. Any info would be appreciated, thanks!

Coal shale is what is used in these parts, the flaky, coal looking dirt neat to coal seams.

Buy a bag from Kendall so you know what it looks and feels like. From what I understand, the mining company might just give it to you. It’s considered a waste product.

It's black and flaky. Not big enough flakes to stop a trap from operating. I started using it this year. Seems to work good.

Would you compare it to waxed dirt as far as weather/freeze proof? I'll probably buy a bag from kendall so I know I got the right stuff first. Does it pack? What about rain and then freeze what are your experiences with it? Thanks for any input. It's an old coal mining town and strip mines everywhere, just recently they started up again so I'm sure I can find the stuff

I've used both waxed dirt and coal shale this year I bought the coal shale since I was running low on waxed dirt as of a couple weeks ago. It packs real nice actually. Haven't had any frozen in traps with it. The downside is it is black so need more sifted to cover/blend. My waxed dirt is local dirt and matches the dirt where I'm trapping almost perfect. So I wouldn't need to sift much over. I had a set in coal shale that experienced everything from -14 degrees to a foot of snow, then freeze/thaw conditions and it caught a coyote. So far in my minimal experience it seems to do good. On NO BS website it says it's all Kendall uses on his line so I figure it has to work pretty good.
