As I mentioned in this thread, the dynamics are different in the western states. Populations of cervids are lower and hunt quotas are mostly zone or unit managed, so the harvests can be better/more accurately managed.
Wisconsin is different than Colorado in this mess.
Wisconsin's response is currently the nation's example of what NOT to do when CWD is discovered. Missouri's government sharpshooters are a close 2nd.
This approach has lost public support and created negative attitudes. I didn't read all of your posts, so how should WI DNR handle this situation? From what Ive learned....WDNR tried to eradicate every deer in a multi-county area upon initial discovery. Did that work? Here's what they ended up with: a low deer population in those counties with CWD still present and citizens that won't support any future CWD management efforts.

Swamp, I don’t know of anyone that will get anything tested for the simple fact of what folks have seen agencies do in other States. No one wants DNR coming to their properties and shooting everything they see. Let me ask you this, what “cure” is there? What is DNR’s answer when they find a “property” with it? Based on evidence it’s been around for the last 60+ years in the West, why are they thinking it will wipe out the East if it didn’t wipe out the West? With that said, it’s been around that long yet they still have no clue how to stop it or cure it. Not a lot of trust in any Government or State agencies going around no matter what horror stories they put out. Think Covid…now CWD. Georgia DNR is NOT shooting any deer..... I've stated this multiple times in this thread. There is no cure....also stated multiple times in this thread. Current research shows the prevalence can be kept low if detected early enough....but it cant be eradicated....ever. I sure hope the carefree attitude that folks have about this turns out to be the right way to look at this. CWD may never reach a high prevalence on the properties where you hunt in Worth County due to the way yall (and probably neighboring plantations) handle the doe harvest...ie killing a lot of does. Knocking down those doe family units is currently what Georgia DNR recommends and especially when a positive is discovered. Does it work? Probably does work in keeping the prevalence low in a positive area....unless the prevalence is already high because nobody ever got their deer tested in that area and it is already well established before its detected. Hence, the best reason for the testing. But, from what Im seeing it is only a matter of time b4 its discovered up your way. Testing is increasing statewide....and ya'll will have some decisions to make in the coming years when one of those mature bucks or does tests positive. Not knowing if your deer is positive won't make it go away.

Neighbor went to Colorado and brought back over 100 meat goats. But of course I’m sure it’s never been spread like that. It’s always a reckless hunter moving a deer Scrapie is exactly same as CWD. Some researchers have stated that scrapie jumped to deer and the deer version is now called CWD (named by that researcher that first discovered it in a research facility in Colorado in 1967.)

Well I seen one deer with something. FWD recommends not to shoot them ?!! She hung around all summer fall Finally got some fat back. I wouldn’t shoot it because I didn’t want to handle the carcass Georgia says kill'em during deer season. Positives don't count against your limit. What were you scared of about handling the carcass?

Hope ya'll are right...but how many people did Covid kill?
Not enough to significantly spike average US death rates for the last 20 years (until the CDC realized their muck up and were told to cook the books). My wife’s grandpa died during the peak of Covid. Guess what cause of death was listed? Like the stage four lung cancer had nothing to do with it!

Really? They eat the entire deer before anyone sees it, bones hide and all?
You said you see carcasses annually. They dont die in groups from CWD.

So cwd research did nothing for the safety of people, nothing to stop the disease, but made more jobs and a bunch of people more $. And all the dead deer from cwd disappeared into coyotes bellies. I'm more worried about the mystery meat from restaurants than cwd my game commission says is here. Its would be different if there were dead deer laying around. Or if I saw weak deer on my trail cams or the the neighborhood deer. "How many people died of covid"? We will never know, they lied to us about it. Until I see dead deer laying around its a follow the $ scam. CDC says dont eat a known positive due to the research showing it might at some point infect humans. That's good info from all that research for people's safety...wouldnt you say? Agencies dont know what they havent learned yet. Most agencies had no personnel that could work on CWD daily. Low prevalence of CWD in an area would mean very few dead deer from CWD. Its easy to turn away from this and call BS. Im still undecided about many aspects of this.

CWD was “discovered” in 1967. But it wasn’t till 1980 that we figured out what caused it.
45 years.
Yet we want to say it’s “new”. Human arrogance. It must be new because we only just discovered it.
If everything they say is true about the prions, this stuff’s been around for a long long time. Eons maybe. I mean geez, we’ve known about scrapie’s in sheep since the 1700s!
And with RECORD deer numbers in many parts of the country in the last 25 years, it would make sense some diseases would rear their heads from time to time.
It wasn’t that long ago in the grand scheme of things, and for many areas, that if you saw a deer you killed it, because you might not see another during season. North Dakota for example, at one point in time had a 1.5 day deer season!!! Fast forward to 2008 and they couldn’t kill enough deer!
There isn’t one place where anyone can definitively prove CWD has decimated a deer herd. But the RESPONSE to CWD has sure killed a lot of deer!!! (While ignoring EHD.)
One state bans baiting, you know, to stop the spread (gee, that sounds familiar). While another state baits away. There is no consistent messaging.
EHD concerns me far more. It actually does decimate deer herds when it pops up. And it seems to pop up every few years these days. Yet nobody says poo about it.

Question for Swamp. Is their a deer farm near where these sick deer started showing up ? There is a pen with exotics within 10 miles that has been there since the 80s. There is a rumor of an un-permitted whitetail enclosure that was within 5 miles of the southernmost positives. Rumor is the past few hurricanes destroyed the fences..... There that is. I wish they would outlaw all this keeping deer in pens.IMO its where all this stuff starts.Deer are not meant to be in pens. The deer come to feed at the same place every day.Thats not natural.evan though deer feed together in the wild sometimes, the feed changes through the seasons. If you watch where it starts in an area their is always a deer farm in the middle of it.

EHD concerns me far more. It actually does decimate deer herds when it pops up. And it seems to pop up every few years these days. Yet nobody says poo about it. Haven't heard that CWD was new. Its well known when it was 1st documented in 1967. Its being discovered in new areas because of widespread testing...not because its new to those areas. Scrapie is believed by some researchers to be where cervids acquired CWD. Higher deer populations more than likely will have higher CWD prevalence. That's a no'brainer. CWD response has killed more deer than CWD. Agencies dont know what to do....they've been guessing at what will work. Every state is different. EHD has a vector.....a sand gnat/biting midge. Eradicate them and EHD outbreaks will all but disappear.

CDC is the same agency that said mask up, social distancing, lock down close businesses, churches, etc. Pardoned if there is little faith in a government agency. I agree. Not much confidence in our government agencies. Have to do own research and be skeptical & questionable of what you read.....which leads to more research and sources. Im very skeptical and I worked for Georgia DNR for 27 years. Ive read the medical research papers from a few years ago that said there is no biological barrier to prevent the jump to humans. CDC likely gets their info from same research and then makes public releases.

I tend to see all this through the same lens as Swamp, but I think this is a good point. At minimum, I would think states would manage in a similar way within regions (western states different from eastern, as previously stated). Michigan has gone full lockdown mode, yet their deer management strategy is still a bit of a head scratcher. Doe tags have increased in price.

I have decided not to worry about it. I like venison. Like elk too. Now days I buy elk meat at a local elk farm. To expensive to shoot one. Does not make sense to worry about something that is very unlikely to kill you. Number one cause of natural death in the U.S. is heart disease. I don't worry about that either. I just hope when its my turn It doesn't take years of being incapacitated.
