first ever marten line, a good friend and I went up north to try our luck on some marten and weasel's, we forgot to take many pictures but here are a couple, going back up north to check in a few days we got 2-4 inches of snow the night before we set so was hard to see tracks but we found a few spot that look good, [Linked Image]

As long as you're setting your boxes up off the ground, you may as well wire your trap chain up higher so that the marten doesn't end up laying on the ground after being caught.
That is the main reason for making marten sets up high in the first place. It can be argued though that grounds sets will generally be a bit more productive, however, depending on your area ground sets may result in fur damagw.

I agree with waggler. If they will climb for you, might as well short chain them to hang free. I my area it seem like everything wants to eat away on a dead marten laying on the ground.
They are my favorite animal to trap.

100% what waggler and mad_mike said. Dead marten on the ground has a high chance of rodent damage.
What are you using for bait and lure? Don't say raspberry jam......

Just doing what I want now.

I am trying something new again this year. I normally use spruce grouse leftovers after eating the breast. The spruce grouse are no more (maybe due to 90 % of the white spruce dying?). I found a pocket of beaver on the line this year and caught some. After skinning I had a pile of carcasses to use for bait. I also had a bucket full of beaver feet and lips. Instead of cutting up beaver carcasses for bait, I thought why not just use the back feet and lips. So far, they appear to be working.

I haven't caught anywhere near the number of marten that you have, but we've always done really well with beaver hind feet.

You guys catch WAY more Marten than I ever have. One thing I have noted over the years is that most of the "climbers" I have caught have been adult Males. If I set on the ground I seem to catch more animals but it is heavy to females and YOTY.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I have good luck using beaver meat. For lure I use gusto and/or lenons marten lure. I also set all mine high enough so the marten are up off the ground.
