My son and I want to try and put up some fur. We usually sell green but are wanting to take our trapping to the next level. What raccoon is the best to start with? We have all sizes in the freezer. I assume a younger smaller raccoon might be the best. Boar or sow? Also we have some adjustable boards. Just trying to get our feet wet with this so maybe next year we can do all our own fur

Given the choice, I would start with a 14 - 16 pound prime sow. For me they flesh easy and I would board them on a 7 1/2" board. Bigger ones tend to have more gristle and or teets that can be easy to rip.

Definitely start with a sow, as said above. The boars have a much larger grsitly saddle that can be difficult to remove without somewhat aggressive, but controlled, use of the sharp side of a knife.
Sows will generally skin easy, flesh easy, and are a little smaller to work with.

Start with the young small ones that are worth little-to-nothin'
And work your way up to the ones that are worth a little
