looking to get my 13 year old a nice three blade hunting knife. One with the knife, saw, and gut hook. Don't want a cheap one but I don't want to break the bank either.

I believe victorinox has something along those lines.

Havalon has something that might work. I was thinking a 3 blade folder but they have a handle that accomodates a variety of resharpenable blades including a skinner, gut hook, and bone saw.

I have a Browning version of what you’re looking for. Pretty handy. I will suggest any knife be orange! So you can find the darn thing. Same goes for phone flashlight car keys wallet. Already paid off once after dropping in tall weeds.

I have an old browning 3 blade that has held up well over the years. It’s a folder that has a skinning blade, a saw blade and a gut hook blade. I don’t know if they make it anymore.

Without a stop on the saw, looks like it would break or be a pain to use on the brisket or pelvis.

the old schrade had a locking saw with a regular blade , I just didn't find the saw all that useful nor is the hook.

I suggest focusing on one good blade with good geometry and some technique.

I don't cut/break the pelvis anymore found if I cut around the anus I could pull it out a ways run the poop out of it and then pull it to the inside l leaving everything clean with no saw or hatchet or the danger of jabbing a knife into the pelvis trying to break it.

are you thinking fixed or folder ?

what is not breaking the bank ? different people have different ideas of that it is very subjective.

my first hunting knife was a Buck 110 lite which is not a bad folder not my favorite geometry but the geometry I like is not so common , it does work well is light and folds with a sturdy lock.

both George Washington carver and Horace Kephart recognized the benefits of a drop point in game cleaning

at 13 teaching him to make one might be a good father son project

here are 3 blades I like
I have spent the least time with this one
https://www.trackofthewolf.com/parts/detail/2812/1/knife-kit-rgr-w
but I like the shape I have one I need to finish

I have the most time with this one
https://www.trackofthewolf.com/parts/detail/2812/1/knife-kit-cam-w
I am not sure there is much of anything it doesn't do well other than maybe a little big for some at 5 inches of blade with a decent handle to match
my son made one of these as well and my wife liked it so much she had me make her one also I lost my original and need to make another although she passed so I have just used hers

or this one
I have the next most time with this one also incredibly handy I modify it a little to suit my needs
https://www.trackofthewolf.com/parts/detail/2812/1/knife-kit-she-04-m

I radius the hard corner at the back edge and give it a Kephart-ish finger groove

the walnut is my sons , the curly maple my wife's , his initials are on the other side wood burned in one more way to help make it a project for the kid.

I've got a browning 3 blade. My parents got it for my 16th BD in 1987. I still use it now. Browning made good knives.

True it's not a 3 bladed knife but if I may suggest the sheep siding knife that they have as a kit that greencountryPete showed the web site for .

I also don't like the idea of splitting the pelvis on game animals because I like the meat to stay clean as possible . if I have to drag the deer or antelope I may not even split open the ribcage on them until I return home and wash them out .

I'd also get him a good F. Dick sharpening steel then teach him how to use it no matter what knife you decide to get him .

You're friend along the snare line .

Look for a classic Puma Jagdmesser. It can be a lifetime knife.

I have one of the Case XX Changers.

Without going to the safe to get it out it has either 3 or 4 blades
Still new in the box
Has sheath also
It's a lock blade knife
Nice set up.
I thought I would use it and never have, it would make a nice knife for a young man
If interested, PM me your info and I can send you all the pics you want.

I just have a single bladed knife but it is a case knife similar to Savell's. For a quality pocket knife I would absolutely check out case knives. It is the best pocket knife I have ever had.
