Got my deer Thursday and came up with something usfull I haven't seen anywhere.
If you cut from the inside out, knife blade on inside surface, you don't cut hair and it doesn't get allover everything.
If you slide some cardboard down in front of the goodies you don't accidently cut anything gross and keep everything clean.

I do mine at the house so maybe it seems more convenient for me but you could have this in your pack too I guess and its light.

Outdoor Edge has the best gut blade in the business. It cuts from the inside and NEVER gets plugged with hair like traditional gut hooks tend to do. Had one for a dozen or more years and would never use a tradional gut hook or mess around with cardboard...

I use a pocket knife. Either case mini trapper or buck stockman. Use hand to hold entrails out of the way.

What Danny said, I never messed with gut hooks, and now I don't gut at all....a hooked utility blade works good on opening cuts in the hide though.

I just hold the tip of the blade between the tips of the index and middle finger of the other hand and run both together cutting from the inside out all the way.

Each day is a gift. LIVE IT with gratitude.

This. I tried a gut hook, just can't make them work decent.

Same. I do cut the hide back several inches to either side before I open the cavity.

I do the same except the part about holding the tip. I just run the knife , blade up, between the skin and belly muscle then peel it to the sides a bit before opening the cavity.

A friend bought me a nice knife with a gut hook once. I used it on one deer just to tell him I did. I didn't like the hook at all, it kept getting hung up while I was detaching organs, esophagus, etc.from inside the chest cavity.

Eh...wot?

I always just split it open a little ways, force my hand inside with knife blade pointing outside, punch my way forwards to the brisket. never cut any guts. just open like a zipper is installed

That's the way Dad taught me years ago. It has always worked for me ... never nicked an intestine.

Done it that way all my hunting years, only takes a little practice.
