Made a thread last year asking about smokeless muzzleloaders and someone turned me onto woodman arms. After some research I ordered a .40 cal. There is a bit of a learning curve with this gun, bullets need to be sized, smokeless powder weighed, it uses large rifle primers in an insert instead of 209s due to high pressures. Shoots 80 grains of Varget behind a 240 Parker match bullet which scoots along at 2950 fps. I haven't had time to shoot long range yet but it should be very 400 yard capable. Shot it 8 times yesterday and I was definitely ready to be done shooting after those 8 shots, recoil is manageable but stout. Whoever recommended woodsman, I appreciate it. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/12/full-51451-278040-20251210_105444.jpg)

Thanks for the info. Two guys I muzzleloader hunt with have the Savage smokeless powder guns. Can't get them. I have one in stainless. Used it several years then had it cut down for NY daughter when she was about 6. It's snow to small to comfortably shoot. Wanted to get a bad bull made in KY but not willing to pay the price they want. Smokeless is the way to go. Withe the savage velocity was limited because the sabot needed to hold up but got to around 2300fps with 250gr xtp. Same bullet I used for years out of other black powder guns but the deer went from running 70 yards to dropping in their tracks with the increased velocity. The bad bull don't require sabots. Not sure if this one does but its about the same speed. Could be improvement in plastics over the years if so.

Can u shoot something other than target bullets out of it Yes but you cannot shoot sabots, the plastic will not withstand the pressures these guns generate. I've been warned that the parker match bullets will be hard on deer, I was looking for something that will drop deer or offer short retrieval as we hunt in cattail swamps that are almost impenetrable at times.

Pretty awesome but recoil was a bit harsh. Sometimes ya gotta risk it for the biscuit. How else can you feel like your shooting something suitable for an African safari while hunting whitetail?

Sabot slugs , smokeless muzzle loaders , 41 great lakes , it seems like the DNR and states are like well you can't use a rifle but you can use this lesser gun
and the American gun public is like hold my beer ,
lets make a sub moa 400 yard muzzle loader
a 250 yard + strait wall
and a 200yard + sabot shooting shotgun
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

When you get tired of having your teeth knocked out, switch to Blackhorn 209. Ya, I know it's expensive, yada, yada, yada...At least as good of accuracy.
With the Parker bullets...I spent over an hour talking to the owner on the phone last week, and what I can tell you is...get rid of the target bullets, and get his Black Max hunting bullets. I have been using a target bullet, similar to the one you posted, from a different manufacturer, for years. Ditch the aluminum tip. 1 bull elk, and 5 deer (including a VERY large buck that I shot the top half of his heart off), and never had a blood trail. Those target bullets pencil in, and don't exit.
You are ok using Fed 215M, CCI 250M, or, I've even been told a regular LR primer such as a Fed 210. Seriously, my advice is to ditch the aluminum tip target bullet, and get a hunting style. There are not very many full bore diameter bullets around. When you get a load dialed in with BH 209...let the smilin' begin!
Been there, done that. If you have any other questions, feel free to pm me.

Thanks yukon, no chance I swap away from smokeless, ill just make range sessions 5 shots or less from now on. I will look into your ammo suggestions. Did the animals you shot with the Parker match go far? I've heard they do a lot of damage
I'm using federal 210 primers.
