If I was going into griz country and only allowed a shotgun, it would be 870 everyday....they just plain work.

Yeah Pete
I would have to say my Mossberg 500 is my go to. Has killed more birds than any of my other shotguns. I have an SKB 20ga killed fair about of pheasant and few grouse. Got a ithica feather weight I inherited because I always like it. Have only ever shot clay pigeons with it. Got couple 870s 12ga and 20ga killed things with them. Got Winchester 1300 slug gun my son shot doe with this season. Got a Richfield double barrel 10ga smacked pile of geese with and several turkeys.
Got some kind of Shotgun won at banquet still in box, have to look to remember what brand.
But all said and done.
My Western Field shotgun I bought used in 1975. Which is just a bit prettier mossberg 500 stamped Western Field. Has shot everything I listed shot with my other shogun. Guess its the winner.

Maybe Mossberg has made improvements over the years, but back in the 80s, my buddy carried a M500 and I always made sure he stayed a distance from me when out hunting. That thing rattled and made more noise than a dodge truck rolling down a dirt road...their fit and finish was awful....

Not as futuristic-looking as yours but here’s mine. A Browning BT-99 Plus.

every gun has a purpose/use or I guess it is sort of useless

it's little surprise however that the intended use of these involves backing your car up to the 35 yard line , a rack sitting at the 27 yard line , and a rubber tile at each station to rest your barrel on.
if they won't let you park that close they generally have a golf cart or a kid you can tip to carry your stuff out there for you.

It wouldn't be my first choice for upland hunting but for smashing clays, it works fine.

As many others have said 870 or model 12
Ford v. Chevy
I have an 870 that has taken some serious use and just plain works every time
My 3 gun battery is an 870, model 77 and a 10-22. Covers just about anything

I like the Browning BPS. Top safety, shells eject out the bottom, Great set up for us left handed shooters.

a completely acceptable use and what it is intended for

open ended questions like this make for good discussion even if so far from the ops original line of though.

there were a ton of great shotguns , that did one thing or another very well , lord only knows how many models have come and gone , the new model does something a touch better or sometimes not but cheaper.

A bunch of good reading folks. Pretty much exactly what I was hoping for. Thank you all for throwing in. I hope the discussion continues.

yes the M12 Winchester is amazing , and rather heavy , but I take it out of the running because it is no longer made and hasn't been for a long time.

The Ithaca M37 is also very nice but not really a player in the work horse pump gun any more either.

so 870 and 500

the down fall to the all steel receiver on the 870 is the ejector , it is rivetted in before the receiver is finished and it is the most major wear item on the gun and also holds the barrel index so the barrel wobbles and isn't safe to shoot with a broken ejector.

so this was a sort of problem but one that could be repaired with time and parts but it got very close to the value of the gun so then it made it for many a throw away gun and I hate throw away guns that when a part that should be able to be easily fixed causes the end of service for something that could keep going for a much longer time with how everything else is made

then , Remington went bankrupt and the part wasn't available

some years go by and there is apparently a aftermarket part that you drill out the rivets and the new ejector has threads and little screws so you don't have to scrap your gun for the wear part but it is more expensive than it should be and it is more work than it should be

the aftermarket part is 89 dollars and shipping
https://www.weaponsarmorer.com/product-p/sully870ejectorsystem.htm

the ejector on a 500 takes one screw , 5 minutes at home and you are back in business for 8.54 and shipping of a small padded envelope.

also a standard 500 holds 5 in the tube one in the chamber
the standard 870 was 4 and 1

I own both , I shoot both , I like both
but when functionality of working well for a right or left handed shooter (I have a couple in 20ga I used for teaching kids)
parts compatibility and availability.
a larger trigger guard for cold weather gloves
and a lighter gun to carry in the field
a Larger safety to get off easily (I use an oversized aftermarket safety) , the 500 is what I am carrying.

I shoot the same score with the 500 or the 870 in a round of trap. so these are the reasons I carry the 500 in the field.

Despite your enjoyment of the Mossberg, I still intend to talk to you. You throw a bunch of good information on most every gun post, and I appreciate it.

That's a duck and goose slayer's dream. The gun's weight plus the long barrel (more weight) makes swinging, leading, and following through almost automatic
