I’m kinda mixed on this thing.
I get it when people who are terminally ill,, if it’s their choice, they can square up with GOD over weather or not it is punishable in the eternal darkness or not..
But this could be a slippery slope.. what if someone who is in a nursing home or someone else who is considered a burden?
I dunno

Stand by your principles, Stand by your guns, and victory complete and permanent is sure at last.

Yep. I'm for it but I think it could come with issues.

The law will be abused by the government in Illinois, just as happened in Canada.

As a Catholic and regarding assisted suicide, I wouldn't even consider it.

Regardless, I am not concerned with how other people how live or end their lives. Freedom.

I haven't read the law and am addressing the subject generally.

In IL your just a drone to be taxed once you outlived that usefulness they don’t need you then. I wonder how many indigent people they will bump off using this law everything in IL comes down to money in the end. Like most laws it will probably end up weaponized and another “Land of Lincoln” scandal in the future.

Never regretted leaving that state!

It makes me think of the work horse, Boxer, in George Orwell's "Animal Farm", getting hauled off by the nacker, after he can no longer work.

It would be very easy to talk an already depressed person into suicide. And some people are sick enough to consider old people useless.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

Go to a nursing home, many there don't know where they are. If that's living, I'll pass.

If you're really a Catholic you should be concerned about life....all life.....freedom has nothing to do with it. If you can point to any Catholic teaching that says..."hey..it's your life.....feel free to denigrate and end the life God gave you...on your terms....I won't stand in your way because ummm...freedom " ...point that teaching out for me.

You obviously haven't spent much time volunteering or helping out in a nursing home. Give it a try..maybe you'll learn something.

Look up MAID in Canada. Quite a few horror stories coming out of there and it has reached the fourth leading cause of death.

My missus has worked nursing homes since she was fifteen. She would slap your jaws for that thought.

I would question your morality making that sort of determination regarding others. What's next, clearing the ghettos?

I didn't determine anything, I said they don't know where they are, which is true. Also that it's not for me and I'm not doing it. Reading comprehension is a good thing.

I don't want anyone to feel they need to end their life--or to do it. But I missed in the Bible and the Catechism where it is my or the government's place to impose my will, morals or religion on someone else. I know plenty of Christians--and many of them Catholic disagree. They want to force their will, morals and religion on everyone. Sounds Islamic.

And, suicide is an extreme example. There are lots of mortal sins that are perfectly legal. They may not be as permanent, but they send you to the same place.

What part of " assisted" is too vague for you?

It could be a good law. Don't mean it won't get abused. I am not going to a nursing home just to wait to die.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

You forgot that they also attempt to relieve you of every cent you ever earned and everything you own. That seems to be a main purpose of nursing homes.

I imagine this is right but I think if you commit suicide more than X years after getting the policy, benefits are still due. My recollection is that X is typically 2 years. This is not what I do so I may be off.

If you've had the policy over 2 years, suicide is treated like any other natural cause of death. Read your policy, if you have one.

Being someone who is terminnaly ill, End Stage Kidney Failure, I can relate to the subject. Generally it's not considered a suicide to end treatment and let go. So far for me, in spite of the incredible pain and down days where I can't hardly move, life still can be enjoyable and productive so I haven't reached the point of pulling the plug. It was very close last month but I think God may have a use for me yet so I can make it awhile more

Wow, I agree with Rat Masterson. Having a Mother in law that was in a nursing home for almost 2 years with failing health and Dementia. Her quality of life was zero. I would much rather go out with some dignity than waste away there. There are people that thrive in a nursing home and there are people that just exist due to health issues. I'm sure he's talking about the latter. I know the difference but evidently some don't. I can't think of anyone that would just want to exist and not actually "live".

I guess it makes a difference too if you're being paid by the nursing home you'd want to fight the assisted suicide law. Never mind the 8k to 12k a month that the family has to pay for someone who has no hope and no quality of life as is the case with many residents. Along with in some facilities the minimum care that is given.

My Mother in law made clear before hand that she didn't want to live that way but the choice wasn't hers.

Huge difference between determining for yourself when to stop treatment or to sign a DNR and asking a third party to commit murder or worse make that decision for you. No one should ever be given the power to intentionally end a life outside of defense of life itself.

For the medical field who's oath starts with First Do No Harm to participate in such is an abomination.

The whole basis of western civilization is the sanctity of life and the individual not the convenience of society.

Assisted living is not jail. You put your parents there because they can get a better quality of life than at home. Being disabled at home is not necessarily a quality life. Living in your own filth, and eating month old food out of your fridge with dirty silverware, wearing dirty clothes, forgetting to wash and not taking meds correctly. Little to no social activity.

I wish You well and all goes well. A completely different look on things when we are on the opposite end of the discussion.

Thank YOU

I agree with totally but that method isn't for everyone.

Watching my grandmother in law gasping for air with congestive heart failure i just keep thinking anything on the farm I would put down without a 2nd thought. But she played there around a day like that in horrible pain and fear struggling to breath. I loved that woman like my own grandmother having been the woman that introduced me to my wife when I was 16. YES I considered putting her down out of mercy briefly.

For me im not made to be locked up in a nursing home. My daughter just quit ther job at a long term care place as a nurse she could not handle things not being done correctly for the residents. She started at a hospital and was still filling in at the extended stay place on some days off. Bed sores on people she had had cleared up were back since she was not there enough to keep up with it. Among other things.

Im a bit conflicted now that I have some health issues and some days it limits my mobility and I have hand tremors making accurate shooting not possible. It's come and go with the problems but I always said if I can't get out and in the woods for a short walk and at least shoot .22 or air guns I won't want to live like that. I can still do those things just some days not well. Im 45 and can see the potential for things to go down hill fast. Symptoms really flair up when I live like Im used to. Taking an easy is not how im wired but becoming necessary.

Mom said if her cancer come back and she has to go through that again there is a point she will take care of herself. THEN TELLS ME TO if its to fast and she gets to where she can't saying I don't want to lay there in pain and go out like all my cancer killed friends.( she has made a lot of friends in treatments many have died over the last 6 years) OK mom thanks for putting that on me.

It could get abused for sure but for me personally I don't want to lay around in bad shape not able to do anything maybe not knowing what im doing or where im at. I don't want that burden on my family seeing me either away and I don't want the nursing home draining all my net worth. I Would rather go out quickly not roting away and leave a nest egg behind for my family.

Jesus allowed himself to be killed whan he could have stopped it. Seems similar to me.

For many, many years this has already been done. Just not talked about.

My FIL was at end stage lymphoma. He was going to die and chemo only prolonged the death date.

He reached a point he could not bear in pain and chemo. He called everyone and said his goodbyes. He took off the oxygen, that was at max, and they gave him full rein on the morphine pump.

That is assisted suicide. It just isn't talked about in that fashion. And it has been done for decades.

I have a great friend who has glioblastoma. 100% terminal. He is choosing to do chemo and radiation. That is his choice. But in the end if he changes his mind, I won't blame him one bit.

It hurts seeing a friend with a counter on his days. I call him often and talk as if all is like it was. I do ask how he is getting along and he isn't complaining. He knows. I just hope it is painless and fast. I hope they give him full access to the morphine pump when the time comes if he chooses.

My father is in constant pain everyday. His hip and legs are done with no hope for surgery. His life is miserable and you can see it in his eyes. His overall health is fine. He lives in a recliner, at the kitchen table, in the bathroom, and in the bed. He goes out with a buddy about every two weeks to get lunch. He asked me last time when he had to go to the hospital, Why won't GOD let me die? I told him GOD still has use for him. But...... If he ended his life I would be grief stricken and utterly broken. But I would also smile in knowing there was no more pain.

Assisted suicide happens every day in the hospital whether we want to call it that or not. There is no difference in allowing a morphine overdose than the same person putting a bullet in the temple. There is just a different cause of death listed.

We don't let animals suffer when the pain is too much and they are 100% gonna die. We shouldn't let people suffer either.

I may answer to GOD for this one day, but that will be my cross to bear and anyone else in favor of ending suffering.

Im not against stopping treatment if its the person's wish and I haven't read the law but devaluation of life is a very slippery slope and the left never stop pushing us farther down that slope. Its the beginning of something that we will look back at and wish we hadn't taken that first step. Im sure in Canada, as someone else posted, you can find where it leads too. Assisted suicide is the first step towards legalizing for someone else to make the decision whether someone gets treatment or if they should continue living.

Stopping treatment and killing someone are two different things. No one should be required to take medical treatments, but giving them a lethal injection or something similar is a whole other story.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

I think bowhunter must be a mind reader....as he mentioned what hospice does at the end....morphine o.d.
As mentioned already we treat our animals better than humans at the end of life.

I think assisted suicide should be allowed, but worry that the government and insurance companies will corrupt it.

It should be allowed in all states. A DNR that you fill out when in the hospital is just one of the legal ways that is available in all states. DNR medically stands for Do Not Resuscitate. But you should have choices if you are terminally ill.

Oregon has had its Death With Dignity Law on the books since 1997. There was a lot of drama about it when it was being voted on but you never hear about it anymore so i assume that means that it is working just as the proponents had hoped it would.

3 people that I knew well in my youth have used MAID in the last year. Cancer was taking them in a terrible way anyways. If ever facing this situation personally I know I will too. It won’t affect life insurance either.

It’s pretty much a “don’t like it, don’t do it” situation to me. Maybe everyone is different, but I have a tough time remembering anyone I watched pass as anything other than those last stages. I’ll choose to not go out as someone who looked dead long before they were if I have to.

I haven’t read my life insurance, but I know some older ones don’t pay on suicide no matter when issued, I do agree that it’s a good practice for those who want it I have a cousin that would probably do it as he’s fought cancer for over ten years and found out today that he has a large tumor in his spine that has caused him to lose the use of his legs so now he lays in a hospital bed waiting to die.
