The electric augers are the balls ...my nephew has the Ion...I think.

Always starts...and has reverse..to help clean the hole.

I think I would get an Ion. When I was at the sporting goods store, that's what we sold the most of and also what I heard the fewest complaints on.

How much ice do you get? If it's under 2 feet, I would just use a cordless drill and a k-drill, eskimo pistol bit or the Strikemaster Lazer bit. I just got the new Eskimo Pistol bit and it pokes a hole in 8" of ice in about 4 seconds and the whole setup weighs next to nothing. Also, it takes up less space if you are hauling your stuff out without a machine.

I have a half inch milwaukee hammer drill with i think 4-5 inch auger. I don't ice fish as much as used to so the drill is good enough.
The first time I seen an ION several years ago now. Old guy that had it said it was lighter than his gas drill. He had bad shoulder so cranking hand drill was done. Now was bad enough hard to pull start gas auger. Was really liking the electric full charge made more holes than he needed.

I've got a Strikemaster 40V. I love it.

This is what you want. You can use it with a battery operated drill that has a brushless motor. It will go through the ice in seconds. I use the six inch auger.

2 years now using a 10inch Eskimo Pistol Bit and I will never go back to the 8inch Nils unless I will be doing a lot of drilling in 24inch thick + ice.
