So!!!! I will let you in on a little secret. In 1990-91 season. We got pounded with a blizzard 10/31/1990. I lived in MN at the time.
We punched in pockets on the side of the creeks. At water level which was frozen ice. 4 inches plus.

When everything becomes frozen. Food is scarce. Survival over rides fear. We laid the traps on top of the ice. With grass spread over them. Caught quite a few fox and mink. If you can’t blend your trap in. Blend the area in to your trap. This area to the pocket was a 3 foot area. Big bait in the pocket. Good strong lure. Not every canine or mink committed. But some did. Coyotes as well.

Hope this helps. Good luck!!!

Well I got a coyote and a fox this morning. Pounding the rebar straight in held great. I had to use an axe to get them out this morning. Gives me a little more confidence in setting on the ice now

The Coyote was close enough to the edge of the creek where there was some open water. I tried drying it off like i do beaver and rats in the snow lol

Drying K9s with snow don't seem to work as well as with water critters. Have used snow to clean up some blood though.
Nice pictures

This is the darkest coyote Ive caught. I think its real pretty once i got it cleaned up. Had another coyote run away when i checked the cables yesterday morning. So theres more around, but we had some real warm weather yesterday that covered any trails/tracks. Hope we get a dusting of snow today that they can leave fresh tracks in. I've caught coyotes with footholds, but I do seem to have much better luck with cables. I often get next day catches vs footholds often time taking many weeks. I like the simpleness of cables and ease of putting in sets. I feel like I leave much less scent also when putting them in

The thing I don't like about ice trapping is if you're using a body grip trap that kills the animal, their body heat will cause the fur to stick to the ice as the animal cools down. Snow on the ice helps some by insulating against that problem.

If my cat area creek freezes the cats will run it it’s just easy walking for them so it adds to their options I prefer it to be running so they use a pinch point at the shelf above the creek only.

If I have to set the creek if the tracks show that’s the route they are running I set under the roots where it’s undercut. I use the exposed roots as a guide often it works like a cubby where the dirts washed out. I hook the drag off of the ice in saplings or higher in the root systems so as little of the chain/drag freezes down in the ice that way.

I use dry dirt from the undercut bank then add waxed dirt to prevent freeze down a few guide sticks to finish it off.

same idea , just with a section of limb with the cable connected to it

spud bar a small hole big enough for your 1 1/2 inch or so in diameter stick sturdy not rotten a bit of trapping wire wrapped to make sure your cable extension stays on the middle.
slide it down the hole push it through with spud bar so it goes under and turns sideways , now even if your hole opens up a bit , same idea as putting a winch line in an ice hole to pull someone out
