Every time there is a bad news event they trot out somebody to do sign language. Why? They all look like spastic constipated zombies and are a huge distraction. I doubt there are any deaf reporters present. The hearing impaired television audience surely uses close captioning. I have hearing aids but still use close captioning. They aren't used at other press conferences, only where there is law enforcement at a tragedy. I find it terribly distracting which kind of defeats the purpose of public awareness. Is it purely for political correctness or is there an actual purpose that I'm not seeing?

I am a firm believer in something a cartoon character said 75-years ago. “If you can’t say somethun nice, don’t say nothin at all”. Quoted as close as I can from Thumper, in the movie “Bambi”.

Hearing impaired people need information too. If governments want to keep ALL citizens informed, this is a good effort on their part.

The funny thing is that a few people a year get away with using fake sign language at important press releases. Some even perform rude or obscene gestures.

People fake it in other countries too.

Closed captioning sucks. When I put it on its almost always wrong and confusing
Let them sign away.

what about deaf Spanish speakers?

the signer at the Brown U presser stopped when a question/answer was proffered in Spanish.

don't deaf Spanish speakers deserve to be informed?

Well maybe people that don't like watch some spazes flop around on TV. Change channel..
Maybe should be using a radio and ear buds like old days.
Works good if you want know whats going on with a ball game. Maybe don't want to watch some ball player scratch his nuts and spit six times before swings his bat. Or heaven forbid like my brother, you have to watch some women talk about her flow in tampon commercials.
Gotta wonder what that would look like signed??

Its such a struggle this world the many burdens we all bare.

when I used to watch some TV I put the subtitles on. ofter it was late and I couldn't sleep and everyone was in bed. My hearing is bad and would have to have the volume high to hear it. I have no problem with subtitles and after a while grew to like and prefer them.

A serious question can the caption be shown in different languages? I thought my TV could but couldn’t figure it out to get it to do it.
