Mine is a 870 special purpose, matte finish and came with a sling. Never failed me, but I was very close to getting shot with it from my Chesapeake. I am sure he would have claimed it was an accident but I know better.

My 870 is the express. Not sure if that is the cheaper model but if it is I don’t have any complaints after 35 years of using it. So far have not had any issues.

Handle a Wingmaster sometime DRF. The difference in quality is very obvious. I have both.

Eh...wot?

We have a Wing master , 870 police magnum , Special purpose magnum , and express magnum 21inch vent rib

they all shoot , they all hit , the Wing master is smoother out of the box and has a nicer finish

the barrel and trigger group matter more than the receiver stamping , they all start the same block of steel , the Wing master gets more polishing

I am not a fan of the newer mag tubes with the wave washer and plastic follower rather than the detent but that is fairly minor.

the finish on the express is the cheapest possible and likes to rust if left in a humid kitchen even , but paint sticks to it very well so those guns are great for spray bomb camo jobs

the trigger group I like the metal trigger groups but have shot poly trigger groups in other peoples guns ok , dry lube down in the trigger group helps as does use , cycle it a lot , dry fire it a bunch , then use it and they aren't bad , it's a field gun a 5 1/2 pound trigger isn't really an issue I checked and I have 2 breaking at 3 1/4 the others are 4 pounds
the express is one of them breaking at 3 1/4 as is the police. I think it has more to do with broken in and lubed with a dry lube than what is stamped on the side.

the thing about express is it doesn't get any of the fluff and buff treatment at the factory , it gets out the door with the least amount of labor possible.
that doesn't mean you can't do the clean up yourself
and have a smooth operating gun

barrels I have had thin old 870 barrels and they shot great but half way through a round of trap you were looking through mirage at the clay because they heated up so.
we find slugs in a vent rib start to pull higher with the 2-3 round and keep going up about and inch on round 3-4-5

I have a barrel they don't sell an 870 police magnum barrel with the iron sites that has choke tubes. I sent to Carlson's and had cut and threaded for Rem chokes , that worked very well
that police 870 doesn't look like much because it shows the finish wear of 25 years in a squad car but it is smooooooooth

I very much like the shorter barrels on the 870 but I do on the 500 also.
I run out of pattern way before I run out of sight picture.

yes the M12 Winchester is amazing , and rather heavy , but I take it out of the running because it is no longer made and hasn't been for a long time.

The Ithaca M37 is also very nice but not really a player in the work horse pump gun any more either.

so 870 and 500

the down fall to the all steel receiver on the 870 is the ejector , it is rivetted in before the receiver is finished and it is the most major wear item on the gun and also holds the barrel index so the barrel wobbles and isn't safe to shoot with a broken ejector.

so this was a sort of problem but one that could be repaired with time and parts but it got very close to the value of the gun so then it made it for many a throw away gun and I hate throw away guns that when a part that should be able to be easily fixed causes the end of service for something that could keep going for a much longer time with how everything else is made

then , Remington went bankrupt and the part wasn't available

some years go by and there is apparently a aftermarket part that you drill out the rivets and the new ejector has threads and little screws so you don't have to scrap your gun for the wear part but it is more expensive than it should be and it is more work than it should be

the aftermarket part is 89 dollars and shipping
https://www.weaponsarmorer.com/product-p/sully870ejectorsystem.htm

the ejector on a 500 takes one screw , 5 minutes at home and you are back in business for 8.54 and shipping of a small padded envelope.

also a standard 500 holds 5 in the tube one in the chamber
the standard 870 was 4 and 1

I own both , I shoot both , I like both
but when functionality of working well for a right or left handed shooter (I have a couple in 20ga I used for teaching kids)
parts compatibility and availability.
a larger trigger guard for cold weather gloves
and a lighter gun to carry in the field
a Larger safety to get off easily (I use an oversized aftermarket safety) , the 500 is what I am carrying.

I shoot the same score with the 500 or the 870 in a round of trap. so these are the reasons I carry the 500 in the field.

The aluminum receiver dose not do well if put in the compartment the seats fold up in in the mini van when the jumper cables have a little battery acid on them. Bought 590a1 mariner to keep full time in the wife's van loded with 3" 00. the receiver has some pits in it now.

Lighter = more recoil and dit just seem sloppy on the pump with the rattle you don't get with an 870. They work but I prefer an 870. Never had an extractor issue but don't shoot shotguns like either used to when I was competing in NSTRA field trials. Never got into clays a lot. Maybe once or twice a year so will likely never weare one out. The mosburg safety is nice for left hand shooters

a sleeve over it would probably protect it from a bunch of stuff not good for a shotgun riding around in the floor boards of a van

even better when you run one of the several oversized all metal safeties

I am running this type https://ndzperformance.com/ndz-mossberg-shotgun-enhanced-safety-selector-v1-ndz-mos-es-v1-v/
promag made the first one I put on but these look and work the same

Vancomp and a couple others also have different oversized safety levers

the weakness of the 500 is the plastic one gets loose after time and doesn't stay off under recoil the metal ones don't bend over time with the spring and ball detent pushing on it.

as far as weaknesses go it's a 15 dollar fix easily done and it improves the use with gloves on

Over $2500 or over $10,000. Need to be more specific.

I've always liked Winchesters. They are balanced and have 2 arms working the action instead of one so they wear evenly. My1300's pumps all will eject the spent case like a semiautomatic shotgun. They are very smooth and fast. Never had a lick of trouble form any of them.
Mossberg and Remington pumps are solid but in my opinion sound like you're shaking a tool box when you work the action and they are now where near as smooth as the Winchester model 12 , 1200, or 1300. The aluminum receiver and steel bolt work great together. I also like the rotary bolt that locks the shell into the chamber. They all shoot well. Just personal preference. I have probably 30,000 rounds through my 20 ga 1300. It's smooth as silk and still going.

I have an 870 Wingmaster. I got it for Christmas in the early 80's. It is a special gun to me. A couple years ago I was invited on a pheasant hunt, I decide to shoot some sporting clays to practice. After a few rounds I wanted a different gun and purchased a CZ Drake Southpaw over under, yes I shoot left handed. I like it but after lots of sporting clays I decided to get a nicer gun. Buying a nice left handed gun is not easy. I didn't like the porting on Browning 725,s and 825 are not available in left handed. So I looked at Beretta and decided on a Beretta 688 left handed with an adjustable comb. My favorite gun now!! It's a little heavier, than the 870 or CZ. I like the longer barrel 32", make swinging through much more consistent. Being lefthanded and the adjustable comb make fit great, also added a thicker recoil pad to adjust length of pull. Recoil is very acceptable. Still use the 870 for turkeys and float trip ducks but clays or wing shooting, I use the 688.

I've always liked the Win Mod 12 but it was my first shotgun and what gpa had. Have to respect the 97's. Next would be A5's but thats what all the old timers I hunted with carried growing up. I bet I've seen A5's kill over 1,000 coyotes. My bro bought Ithacas and they are pretty nice too. Rem1100's were a work horse for years and years and I have one thats not for sale. The first shotgun I spent a chunk of my own money on as an adult was a Benelli SBEII. Beretta makes some fine autoloaders I dream about. I always liked those engraved Franchi over unders too. There are some pretty fancy engraved SxS that have very few parts that can fail.

Can anyone one here legit complain about a model 12 they had problems with that wasn't due to the some kunckle head messing with it? I have a couple mod 12's Id take hunting anywhere and they are practically a 100+ yard rifle shooting just pumpkin ball slugs... I used to take a mod97 to a local turkey shoot every sunday morning and did just fine with it. It was fun being a 16yo kid showing up with a 97 and winning. lol.

Fun orig post.

I saw the same accuracy out of all the Winchester pumps I ever shot. Real shooters when it comes to a foster slug. I've had some come and go. The Win 1300 is the first one to the dove field every time I go. I have several I shoot slugs with. I shot one deer over 350 yards with a slug and killed it. But I shot more when I was younger.
